I’ve been waiting for Rod Stewart to record a Christmas album for years. With a voice that’s as warm as a cup of hot chocolate, I knew it would be terrific. Now that it’s here, is it? For the most part, yes. Rod’s in good voice, the arrangements are beautiful and there are a handful of special guests to keep things interesting.

David Foster produced this album, and it sounds great. That said, many of the arrangements – which are beautiful – are extremely mellow. Where the album really shines is the more upbeat tracks, such as “Merry Christmas, Baby” with Cee-Lo Green and “Red-Suited Super Man.” These two songs allow Rod to let loose and show off his soulful side. I also liked how “Auld Lang Syne” featured bagpipes and “Silent Night” included a children’s choir to liven things up.

Overall, this is an enjoyable Christmas album that features an interesting mix of songs and special guests. If you’re a Rod Stewart fan looking for a great way to kick off the holiday season, you’ll be pleased with Merry Christmas, Baby.

About time, but was it really worth the wait?, November 21, 2012

After a whole bunch of cover albums (including 5(!) volumes of the American Songbook), I can only ask: “Rod, what took you so long?’ But make no mistake, those cover sets were all very well produced, and this one continues the streak. The title track is a duet with C-Lo Green, which works well enough, even if ‘Winter Wonderland ‘ with Michael Buble’ does not. The Original song ‘Red Suit Superman ‘ keeps the whole thing going at a good clip. Other notable guests include Trombone Shorty and Peter Erskine on drums. Rod may be a cover whore of late, but he remains the classy escort variety at least. Sadly, given such a guest list and Rod’s talent, I think it still under achieves by a wide margin.

So what if it takews Rod Stewart many many years before he releases a Christmas album? It was worth the wait! Saw him perform in Las vegas a few times, and I love this performer and his music….Rock, oldies or Christmas! Keep it coming, Rod!

As my title states, Christmas is “just around the corner” so be sure to dedicate one day, out of the next 128, to read this wonderful short Christmas romance. Most of the time with these Christmas romance books the word romance is simply a euphemism for sex, and Christmas is so loosely written into the story as to be nonexistent. Not so with this little gem. The author took the time to incorporate the feeling of Christmas and the holiday season into this well written story, and the tale she tells is wholesome and thoroughly refreshing. There is no portrayal of sex in this novella, although innuendo does play a part.

Perhaps my only complaint with this short is that at times the dialogue and interjections from Christine’s four-year-old son, Tyler, seemed a little age inappropriate. He was young enough to tote around a teddy bear and go to preschool, but his comments seemed to come from a child with a few more years under his belt. This isn’t a big thing and it’s most likely something most will never notice, but I did.

All told, I think almost any reader of romance stories will like this one…it is sweet, romantic, nicely portrayed, and has the ability to transport you right into the thick of things. With its Christmas theme and Vermont winter setting, it’s the perfect way to start getting ready for the Holidays. Enjoy!!!

Copywriter Christine White lost her husband in Afghanistan two years ago, and now she’s living alone with her small son Tyler in Chicago. Having spent so much time at work is starting to harm her relationship with Tyler, so she agrees to go to Vermont and house sit over the Christmas Holiday. Christine figures this will help the two spend quality time together. After getting her car stuck in the snow, she’s rescued by the very handsome Professor John Steadman. The two quickly form a friendship, but both are apprehensive of taking their relationship any further. Will Christmas bring them happiness or heartache?

This is a very simple story, no convoluted speed bumps in this one. This is just two people developing a relationship without the drama of anything going on in the background, no mysteries, no jealous ex’s, no one wants to kill them, no parental interference, nada. I did have two very small issues with this though, the first being that Tyler’s age and the way he’s written seem a bit inconsistent at times. The second being that the ending seemed rushed to me, but the epilogue saves it. Christine and John are both very likable characters. This is a great relaxing Sunday afternoon read.

*This is a clean romance, no naughty bits…just kissing.

The cover might be a bit misleading because it denotes something that is sexy, but this book is rated G and quite honestly, it is so wholesome that even one of your tweens can read it.

The book description says it all. “The Christmas Catch” is the story of single mom Christine White and college professor hottie John Steadman. He lives and works in Vermont and they met when Christine and her son Tyler, who lives in Chicago took their vacation in Winterhaven.

This well-written and well-edited short story is worth all the accolades it is getting. All the characters, including the supporting ones were all fleshed out nicely. The story flowed naturally and though there were a few dialogue that might seem out of place, it did not detract from the story.
