This review is of the 16 x 7 ft screen for garage doors on 5/15/2011.
I have purchased and installed 2. One on my garage door, one on a large porch. Both have the same design shortcomings.

It is 16 ft wide but it is about 2-3 inches short of 7ft long. Therefore I had to put edging on the top of my garage door to get it to reach the ground.

They have changed from using sand at the bottom to using what appears to be aluminum pipe. Probably to reduce shipping weight, unfortunately it isn’t heavy enough to hold the screen closed against even small winds. I purchased short pieces of steel rebar at Lowes which fit perfectly inside the Aluminum pipe and give it enough weight to stay in place during all wind conditions so far.

The over lap for entry and exit is only 4″. Needs to be more like a foot because they use only 1 magnetic at the center to hold it closed. Interesting that the instructions show a screen with a large overlap but the product doesn’t have that much. I assume cost savings on material. Added 2 more magnets, one half way between the existing magnet and the top and one between the existing magnet and the floor and now it stays closed well enough.

The top is attached via eyelets in the top stitching. This is an improvement over the velcro I have read about as you can use nails to hang it. It uses velcro for the sides only and, like everyone else says, it doesn’t stick for very long. However, if you have a large staple gun and the edge around your door is wood just put 1 staple thru the middle of each piece and the problem is solved.

You can make it work (as I did), but it’s not going to be an out of the box perfect fit. When I have to put this much work into a product, it gets only 1 star, even though it is useful.

This is actually an edit to a prior review that I typed out. Although it effectively listed the pros and cons I wanted to edit this review to not only list the pros and cons, but also, list some modifications that I made to get mine much more effective.

First, let me start off by saying that due to the large amount of neutral to negative reviews, I was extremely reluctant to make this purchase. With that being said, my next best option cost a whopping $130.00 more than this one did. Wanting to make an economical decision, I decided this would be the route to take.

    Pros:
    Affordable
Fairly easy install (I disregarded the directions)
    Fairly effective (fulfills its purpose)

    Cons:
    Poor directions (lack information)
“Cheap” The mesh screen material is poorly constructed and very fragile.
Too short & too narrow. (Needs more material) Mine comes 2 inches from touching the ground on the bottom and the overlap although just about enough could have been another inch or two more to improve efficiency.

    Installation:
As stated in the cons, the directions are not informative at all. It advises to mount from the garage door frame. I didn’t know if that meant from the inside frame between the door or the outside of the frame clear away from the door. I chose the inside between the frame and the door because the outside framework was simply not long enough to mount the screen. It “included” the mounting hardware. It comes with anchors and screws but advises if you are going into wood to just use nails (not included). I started using the provided screws and noticed immediately that the mounting holes atop of the fabric were barely large enough to go over the screw head and would make installation/dis-assembly a royal pain & tore one of the mounts in the process (again the screen and material is FRAGILE. I wanted this to be easily taken down and so on so fourth so what I did was just used a total of 3 screws, one on each end and one in the middle and used push pins that had hanging clips on the bottom across the rest of the mount. The screen is by no means heavy at all and everything has kept in place really well through much use.

I also purchased,[...] the velcro rough surface fasteners for added support across the sides. Believe me, a little extra velcro will prove its worth here as using the included velcro will render adhesion weak and you may still have some gaps like I did between the screen and garage door frame. Use caution when unfastening the screen, especially if this velcro is used as it grips firmly. Pull from the velcro and NEVER the screen or it WILL tear.

With all of that being said, there were still three problems remaining. One, I didn’t have enough material to reach the bottom. I could imagine this would be easily fixed by adding more mesh to the bottom purchasable here on amazon or any home improvement store and sewing or attaching it by other means. Since the flying bugs like mosquitos don’t often get to the near ground level it was not a huge deal for me and I left it as it was, especially after having to deal with the other issues first. The second issue is the fact that it only includes one fastening magnet set in the middle of the screen opening. The material did not overlap enough for this to be effective. I fixed this issue by purchasing more magnet for both the top and bottom. The magnet that I purchased was actually in a roll that had sticky backing, I simply cut a length off, cut it in half, attached the two magnets, bent them a little so they took shape to each other and attached them to the mesh at the top and bottom. Worked like a charm. The 3rd and final issue I had was the screen did not look professional at all. It was wavy, loose, curvy, etc. The “piping” they put in the bottom is actually 8 separate pieces stitched in at the bottom. When the wind blew it flexed, waved, and looked cheap. I took a pair of scissors and cut at the seams and removed this thin, flimsy, lightweight piping and purchased 2 10foot lengths of 1/2 diameter PVC piping and cut each piece to the appropriate length and just stapled the ends of the seams back up so they didn’t slide around/fall out. After doing this the screen stays flat/smooth and much more in place. It doesn’t blow around nearly as much with the wind now. I am assuming the reason they don’t do it to begin with is primarily for shipping/packaging purposes as mine came in a very small box that I just couldn’t even believe the double screen could fit in at first.

Finally came the issue of moving cars in and out of the garage without having to take down the screen or have someone try and stand behind the door opening holding the screen up. Once I got the PVC piping in place I decided to make one last run to home depot and purchased something like these: [...]. I mounted them on the outside of the door frame 3 in…

Honestly, a little tricky to put up. They work great to keep the ping pong balls in the garage and most of the bugs out. You may find they don’t fit as snug as you’d like to keep bugs out but remember the price you payed! Just spend a little more on some other parts to help keep them closed well. My grandparents have an amazing screen…and it cost them $160. If you want a better product…spend $160, otherwise these are an AMAZING alternative.
To keep the bars from ripping out of the bottom, I bought some copper pipe insulation small enough to hold onto those bars. That way, the pipe insulation gets ruined but the bars don’t fall out. (pipe insulation = ~60 cents)
