Over priced but has unique features unlike other lamps….., May 19, 2011
    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

    The good:

It’s a very attractive and well designed piece of engineering. The shape and color of the Lune resembles a shiny white Lifesafer. Very pleasing to the eyes. It was smaller than I expected measuring only about 7 1/2 to 8 inches in diameter with the width being a tad longer than the height of the unit. But for the size of the unit it packs a powerful light punch in 7 distinct preset colors and 2 rainbow transition modes (one fast and the other slower). The primary colors are bright, vibrant, and saturated for such a small lamp. It truly does rival the Phillips Living colors on this point. Another thing, the top arm of the unit swings around almost 360 degrees, so light can be projected anywhere easily. And the Lune is light so it can be turned in any way you wish. Here is where IMO, it is vastly superior to Phillips.

    Now, unfortunately for The Bad:

The so called intuitive user friendly touch pad is a bit erratic. It doesn’t always respond to a tap, or even a “hard press” when requesting it to change colors, dim, or turn off. It can “stick”. Nothing like the ad that Cielux would lead one to believe. Also, in the rainbow colors setting you cannot dim the light. This is only possible in the primary colors. Also, when dimming there is no gauge as to how low you can dim the unit before it suddenly shuts off and one is forced to guess and start over again. This can be frustrating. I understand that Cielux engineered the Lune to be super user friendly with only one available hidden button but in my opinion they sacrificed vital options in favor of aesthetics. Also , the Lune is expensive at about 150 dollars.

All in all, I give it 3 stars. 3 for the quality of the light but deduct 1 for the touch pad not working optimally (this is important since this is the only thing that controls the unit – nothing else). And another deduction for the price. At this price point the touch pad should work perfect.

    *Edit – updated May 24th*

I was informed by the manufacturer and seller my experience with the touch pad was not typical of the Lune. Sent the defective one back and Lumens quickly sent me out a new unit. Haven’t received it yet, but am looking forward to enjoying a properly working light.

I’m going to upgrade my experience with this purchase to 5 stars. If the touch pad works the way it should then the price will make it worth while.

Also, for future reference to Cielux. 3 things you can do to improve the Lune.

    1) Allow for dimming in the rainbow modes.

    2) Slow the speed of the Rainbow modes down further (there is little difference between the two). There should be an option where the colors change so slowly one hardly notices, call it superslow.

    3) Allow the dimming to even go down further, almost to night light status.

Simplicity is nice but options are too.

I have this light sitting in my living room and it looks great. The unit itself looks great and the way they’ve hidden the touch pad control gives it a clean look. It’s especially fun during parties/socials and my guests are always asking me about it. The light coming out of the unit looks good–really smooth and uniform as a mood light should be. One of the biggest problems I have with most LED products is that they tend to produce nonuniform light with periodic bright spots. This one doesn’t. Another big plus is that if you don’t feel like having the light in the “halo/ring” configuration you can twists/rotate the top portion and point it towards the wall, for instance. I prefer the halo configuration but can see how someone would like to project the light against a white wall. Overall, great product and would recommending it to someone looking for a functionally/stylistically unique and fun product.

Okay, so this was not a planned purchase. I was at a trade show when the LUNE caught my eye. It was hard to look away! There are lots of designers out there trying to create the next attractive lighting fixture or ornament, but most miss the mark. Part of the problem is because LED lights have different properties and qualities than other kinds of lighting, and designers don’t know how to take advantage of that. Cielux does. The LUNE puts out a steady light in a number of different colors, or a progression of colors. The user interface is just brilliant – an invisible touch area inside the closed circle. With this, the unit can be programmed or the light can be dimmed. Those are the technical aspects. My favorite part of the LUNE is its aesthetics. This is a very “minimalist” light fixture. It puts out light that is meant to be part of the background. It doesn’t compete for attention with objects or conversations. It adds a simple drama to a space. The clean white color and the way color washes around the curve of the fixture is very cool.

The LUNE will probably be compared to the Philips LivingColor product line. I think the LUNE is far superior, and it has nothing to do with engineering. The LivingColor was a first generation LED fixture; the LUNE is clearly the next step. The LivingColor always left me wondering how the manufacturer intended me to use the unit; the LUNE is so simple that it can be placed almost anywhere and it creates that drama. Also, the LUNE allows the user to swing up the downward light, converting it into a mini-spotlight. I look forward to how Cielux and the lighting industry can take the LUNE as inspiration to do more ambient LED lighting products. This product is clearly a trendsetter!
