What NOT to Give Your Mom on Mother’s Day
A little boy offers advice on what NOT to give your mom on Mother’s Day, unless she’s an animal. For example, don’t give her a rotting log unless she’s a salamander, or a bunch of flies unless she’s a spider! What would Mom like best?

Fun and Imaginative,
What Not to Give Your Mom on Mother’s Day by Martha Simpson is a cute story about a little boy who is giving advice about Mother’s Day presents. For example, he doesn’t recommend giving her dead flies– unless she is a spider. He doesn’t recommend giving her a mud puddle either– unless she is a pig. Illustrations of the little boy giving his mom all these strange presents are juxtaposed with the animal moms who would actually really like them. Illustrator Jana Christy does a wonderful job capturing the whimsy in these contrasts, and she nails the mom’s bewildered (and sometimes dismayed) expressions every single time.
What Not to Give Your Mom on Mother’s Day is a simple and sweet picture book for preschool-aged kids. My children enjoy the bright pictures and silly gift ideas. They also like the ending when the little boy advises that the best present for moms is actually a hug and a kiss. Then they usually end up brainstorming other ideas for their mom.
Overall, I have been very happy with ordering this book for my children. It’s great to read at Mother’s Day or any time of the year.
