The Ultimate Sacrifice (The Gifted Teens Series)

Kassia is a 16-year-old girl just trying to have a normal life. This is somewhat difficult because she has the ability to inflict pain on others with her mind, which is why she was sent to a special institute for kids with various gifts. It is here Kassia met her best friend Mira.

Their lives will change forever after Mira is attacked and Kassia finds out her talent is much more powerful when she saves her. Little did she know that this act would attract the attention of demons.

Would you give “The Ultimate Sacrifice” to protect the ones you love??

All the students at the Glendale Institute are “gifted.” This story focuses on Kassia, a mind-blower, one who delivers pain with her mind and can even cause death. Her friends, Mira, Daxton, Noe, Auralee, and Zane all play equally important roles as they come together to stop an army of demons from taking over and everyone being destroyed by them and their evil leader, Kern.

Come along as Kassia learns how to perfect and control her talents after a terrible crime was committed against her very best friend. Unfortunately that might be enough and whe is left with only one way to make things safe aagain for her friends. Will she put herself totally at risk to save them? Will her demise be enough to stop the evil that threatens their survival? This keeps you going, page by page, because you can’t put it down til you see what happens next. This was definitely an interesting and enjoyable journey.

This is not my usual genre of choice, but I do admit that I really liked this story. This author really makes these characters come alive and conveys thier individual feelings in such a real manner that they are easy to relate to. I would highly recommend this story to anyone looking for a good read!

This book was graciously provided to me by it’s author for my honest review.

Fresh YA Paranormal, July 27, 2011

I’m sick of hearing about vampires and werewolves. Now, the thing is zombies. But, I’ll admit it, I have a soft spot for heroines with superpowers (I may be biased), which is Jager’s fresh take on the young adult paranormal genre in “The Ultimate Sacrifice”. This book struck me at the core and I don’t usually read YA. It’s intense nearly from beginning and all the way to the end. It is hard, fast, and brought tears to my eyes several times. Her protagonist, Kassia, is infinitely likeable, particularly for anyone who understands what its like to be outcast (and to have a temper you can’t control!) I fell in love with the love interest and Kassia’s best friend reminded me of my own. I highly recommend this book to anyone who adores young adult and the paranormal.

I have so many issues with this book that I’m just going to list them in one incoherent list: instalove, obtuse plot devices, rape, the all-powerful-gift, resurrection, cheesy title… etc. and the list goes on, but you know what? I still liked this book.

Haha, and no, I didn’t lose my mind. Given that this is a very basic story with great potential for improvement, it was an easy read. I refrain from saying that it was a light read because I’m not sure if I could say that exactly. Why? Well, it wasn’t because the book was unpredictable because it was quite predictable. And it wasn’t because these characters weren’t the most well developed characters in the world. It’s because this book nearly brought me down in tears.

There, I’ve said it. Yes, I nearly cried. There is so much EMOTION throughout the book. Not quite enough at first, but once you get that ball going, it goes. It’s simple. Jager has an amazing ability to really bring to life the hurt, pain, joy, and relationships (romantic and platonic) of her characters. I especially loved the deep friendship that Kassia and Mira share. It made me want to call my friends and remind them that I love ‘em to pieces.

So in short, The Ultimate Sacrifice is a touching story about a young girl’s determination to protect her friends as her friends try to shield her from the great evil, it’s not just about saving the world, but it’s all about relationships.
