Although this is the last volume of the series, it is easily one of the stronger discs (they certainly weren’t scraping the bottom of the barrel for material). If you’re interested in this series, don’t let the fact that this is the 5th volume turn you off: This is as good a place to start as anywhere else. While I could never pick favourites (the series is consistently strong and always fascinating), this disc in particular contains my two favourite tracks of the series: Track 8 and track 16. Oddly enough, track 8 features a large number of musicians blowing into soundless instruments, with entrancing vocal chants on top. Track 16 is almost a pastoral lullabye, and has a very dreamy quality. The rest of the tracks are also of a very high quality, and there’s never a dull moment from start to finish. In all, this disc would be a great place to begin, and is easily as eclectic and interesting as anything else in the series.

I love this entire series. It’s an incredible collection of early and authentic music in its pure state: not-yet-cross-pollinated by musical globalization. Can’t recommend highly enough. This collection, as with all of the Secret Museum of Mankind discs, provides many tracks you’ll never hear the likes of elsewhere. Great for world music lovers, vintage music collectors, and any musician or music lover looking for new, clean sounds for their ears.

The Secret Museum of Mankind series is a wonderful collection of music and musicians from around the world and across time. The notes give a lot of insight about this stage of “world” music. The music is beautiful and amazing. If you have ecclectic musical tastes – you will be very happy with any of the CD’s from this series.
