This review is from: The Fourth of July (Paperback)

This book is funny and accessible. The setting is an island community where the season is short, there’s an urgency to relaxation and where best intentions fuel a Fourth of July week that ends in comic disaster. You can read it in a few hours and come away feeling like you’ve been on a summer adventure.

The story is told by the characters, each of whom see the same events through their own lens. As the story intensifies, opinions galvanize. The rumor mill gets working. A vacation community scraps over each others’ business. Fireworks abound. Deep down, The Fourth of July is a story about how motivation and belief can color one’s view, what happens when we disagree, and how small and comical the world is. But even if simple stuff like stepping on a rake makes you laugh, you’ll love The Fourth of July.

I am very impressed by the author’s writing style. Without giving too much away, I thought it was refreshing to have more than just the main character’s point of view. Speaking of the main character, as much as I had decided to dislike him (only in the first two chapters), he made me laugh out loud. The supporting cast, especially some of the neighbors were quite endearing and comical. Overall, I would read more about Jack Smith and his misguided but well intentioned escapades.
