Reading this book to our children is a great way to teach them proper care and respect for our beloved American flag. I read this to my toddler, and although she doesn’t quite understand it yet, she does enjoy the colorful illustrations. As she gets older, reading this book to her will help her to see the importance of respecting our flag through Elizabeth’s eyes. There are also some neat flag facts in the back of the book! Two thumbs up!

I thought this book was wonderfully written to help children understand the American flag etiquette. Simple wording with those “big” words explained makes it easy for a young child to understand what the book is saying. There were also a few flag facts in there that I didn’t know. The drawings are unique and tie into the story wonderfully. I love that the illustrator is the father of the author. How often does that happen in children’s books? It’s amazing that they were able to collaborate together to create this book. I definitely recommend this book to everyone out there who wants to teach their child/grandchild/etc about the American flag and how to properly display, store, and retire a flag.

Teaching Our Children, October 9, 2010

Raising our kids is both the most challenging and the most rewarding endeavor we face. I want to instill in my children respect and pride in our great nation. Stacy Juba’s book, The Flag Keeper, helps with that. This short book illustrates Elizabeth’s devotion to treating our nation’s flag correctly, with honor and respect. Elizabeth serves as a good role model for our children. The book also has a short list of how to correctly handle and display our flag and some activities for children to better learn how to treat and handle the flag of the United States. After my children read this book they were curious about our flag. This served as a good launch point for me to explain even more reasons why we should show our flag honor and respect. I recommend this book for any young child so they can learn why our flag is not just a pretty piece of cloth.
