This is one of the better handheld sharpeners I’ve used. It is well made and the varied surfaces allow you to do a lot. It is designed to be safe and is fairly durable. It’ll get your knives sharp, but only utility sharp. I was not able to create a shaving sharp edge from a dull blade, even one of higher quality steel.

I originally got this as a portable sharpener I could throw in a bag or in the car if I was going away for a while and thought I might need a touch-up on a blade. However, since then when I was using exclusively water stones and glass stones to sharpen my knives, I have picked up a Spyderco Sharpmaker, which is an awesome sharpener. I’d rather bring the Sharpmaker with me than this any day of the week. Now yes, it’s hard to compare the two, but for the money I think you’re better off spending a bit more and buying something like the Sharpmaker. That’s my personal opinion, and some people might think that a $50 sharpening kit isn’t for them, but I highly recommend at least checking it out and seeing if something like that would suit your needs. I am not endorsed by Spyderco, I’m just a huge fan of that product after sharpening all sorts of knives for the better part of fifteen years. It will bring even my cheap-o utility blades to shaving sharp in a matter of minutes. Likewise, you could purchase just the coarse stones for the Sharpmaker, and sharpen your knife freehand, getting it just as sharp if not sharper than this handheld will do for you with a little bit of practice.

Regardless, the Smith’s sharpener has it’s place and it is pretty good.

A mistake many people will make, and wind up ruining the sharpener, is to try to press harder to sharpen faster or better. The carbide and ceramic surfaces on this item are not meant for aggressive re-profiling or shaping, they are only there to sharpen, hone, and align, with minimal (basically no) ability to polish. Light pressure and more strokes at the exact same angle will yield the best results with this product, and it will last longer as a result. This is true of any sharpening system or technique. Focus on the angle, don’t rush, and let the tool do the work.

    Hope it helps!

I thought that since the title says “crochet in motion” and the description says you sit shoulder to shoulder with the crochet expert that you would actually watch the person making the stitches. I have the “I Can’t Believe I’m Crocheting” with Melissa Leapman also by Leisure Arts and you actually get to watch Melissa making the stitches. In this DVD, all of the pattern stitches and extra projects are in writing. You do not get to watch someone making the stitches. Since I am a beginner, I did not find this DVD to be any easier than trying to read a pattern. If I knew how to read and understand the pattern, I would not have needed to purchase the DVD. There are still several terms that I just do not understand.

    So inspiring and easy-to-follow!!, August 3, 2006
This review is from: Crochet Stitches In Motion (DVD)

I was recovering from surgery and had lots of time on my hands. I was watching lots of DVD’s (movies mostly) was getting tired of that. I came across these crochet Leisure Arts DVD’s and thought I’d give them a try. I crocheted a while ago and figured this would be a good time to get back into it. This DVD has a “basic refresher” section which was perfect. Everything came back and I was ready to dive into the 12 pattern stitches.

Wow! This is so much fun!! The act of crocheting was so relaxing and it felt great to be creative. There’s a nice selection of projects to make with the stitches you learn and you may even feel daring enough to make up some projects of your own.

I loved this DVD so much, I also bought “Crochet Fashions In Motion”, which I also reviewed.

Crochet Stitches in Motion (DVD) is wonderful. I am a complete novice at crocheting. I find it very easy to follow at all times. I am left handed so I really have a hard time learning any stitches from anyone because of this. Anyone who really has a hard time following someone else’s instructions, I suggest that you purchase this. It’s just great and very reasonable. You can learn at your own pace.
