I don’t know if this will help you, but I’m putting it here for those that want to buy it or for those that want to give it one more try before returning like myself. : )

PRO: Price, Easy download of pictures and music
I spent alot of time going over various portable players with video, looking for something that was around $50 or less. I wanted a decent screen size that wouldn’t hurt my daughter’s eyes and the Sesame Street Portable Video Player seemed perfect. For the price, screen size, room for memory slot, its a great price compared to all the other players at this price.

CON: Difficult to download videos for users as described in other reviews.

SOLUTION: Read below for suggestions on how to load pictures, music. VIDEO instruction are further down!

You will need: the Sesame Street device, a memory card (I suggest an HDMI card with 8 or 16 GB to be able to store a couple of movies)

Open the box take the device and connect it to your laptop or desktop to charge (about 4 hours). Do not leave the device connected for more than 4-6 hours because you will decrease the life of the battery. Once charged put the HDMI in the Sesame St. device. Turn it on. It should show you it recognizes the HDMI card. Format the card while in the device. Turn the Sesame St device off and pull out the card by pressing on it gently. It should pop out. Take the HDMI card and insert it into your laptop or desktop or use a card reader if needed. Now drag and drop any pictures and/or music from your computer to the HDMI card. Plug the card back into your Sesame Street device. Turn on the device and select the music or photo you want.

NOW FOR VIDEO TRANSFERS: (The process will take a while)
you will need: your PC, DVD Shrink, conveter software, one of your DVD movies

Formats and other stuff the device runs: The instructions say the Sesame Street device can play avi and other types of video but save time and use xvid. The encoder included inside the Sesame Street device is poor and it does not let you tweak it to meet your needs so you will need DVD Shrink and converter software.

After hours of failed attempts I discovered the aspect ratio needs to be 320×240 (if it’s too big or too small it just wont play)

    Step by step:
If you don’t already have it, install DVD Shrink and converter software on your PC (“AnyVideoConverter” is free on the internet but all your movies will show subtitles as you play the movie on the Sesame St. device).
Take any of your DVD movies, insert it into your PC, run it through the DVD Shrink (not all movies will work because of their privacy coding). The DVD movie has now been shrunk and saved on your PC. Take the DVD out. Now open the converter software and run the shrunken file through the converter. Make sure the converter settings show XVID, 320×240 before starting (if you are using AnyVideoConverter make sure to select IPod nano/classic as your option. It will automatically do xvid and 320×280 for you). Once the movie is converted you can now take the HDMI card from the Sesame Street device and put it in your PC. Drag and drop the converted file(s) from your PC to the HDMI card. Insert the HDMI card into the Sesame Street device and play it (you can find all your pictures, music, and movies by selecting the “memory card” on your Sesame St. device).

Neat cool toy….but you have to be slightly tech savvy, February 20, 2012

OK…. this little player is a neat little toy. The problem with it is that it is cheap (meaning affordable and not a crack on the device) and it cannot handle high definition movies. This is the same with any other similar device (Ipod etc). So you have to know how to do one of two things to use this:

    1) download Youtube videos…. Firefox and Chrome both have extensions… you will find a wide variety of cartoons for your kids…I downloaded about 25 old Disney shorts from the 1930s and 40s with Donald, Mickey, Chip & Dale etc and they all play flawlessly…the default resolution will play perfectly. This device will play avi, mp4, and flv….plus several more video formats.

    2) Convert videos….you need to downgrade the resolution to 640 X 480 or 320 X 240…the software that comes with the device is basic but functional. You can use any video software to do the conversion or just get it off of YouTube as described on #1….

Other thoughts…seems durable. My 3 years old has dropped it a dozen times. My only concern revolves around the SD card slot.I have to watch that my 3 year old doesn’t pull out the chip as there is not a cover or door as in most devices that use SD cards. The SD card sits flush on the bottom of the device so it won’t snag or break, but I worry that my son will figure out that if he pushes down on the card that the spring activated release will pop it out. A minor concern though as SD cards are dirt cheap nowadays…

This device is not perfect, but at the price that I picked it up for at Big Lots it is a no-brainer! I wish I picked up a few more to save for b-day presents and such….

    Enjoy!

I purchased this item for my niece on yesterday from Big Lots. I have spent the past 24 hours attempting to download a Sesame Street video that I purchased from Amazon onto it. Let me clarify…I can drop and drag the video, it just won’t play. The player comes with built in software that is supposed to convert the videos into compatible formats. However, the software gives the illusion of converting to an .avi format, but does not actually download any actual content. So at this point, neither the transferring (drop and drag) or converting methods work.

The player easily syncs to Windows Media Player to download music, but that is not why I bought the player. I could have purchased any cheap mp3 player and done that. I am going to try for maybe another hour to get the video playing. If I can’t I am going to pack it up, take it back and get her something else….Sesame Street Portable Video Player
