This review is from: Sons of Anarchy: Season Two (DVD)

Sons of Anarchy…when I began to see the promos for season 1 I had mixed feelings: I have ridden and loved motorcycles since I was about 15, and like most bikers I have yearned for another biker oriented show ever since “Then Came Bronson” — my concern was that this had the potential to be a really great show but if the writing or acting wasn’t up to speed it could fall on its face very quickly. All worries fell by the wayside as I became addicted from the very first episode. Kurt Sutter’s talented writing and the phenomenal acting of the cast polish this gem to perfection! I immediately purchased Season One as soon as it became available on DVD to tide me over until Season Two began, and I was not disappointed when it did: the characters continue to grow, the plot lines are riveting, and the edge-of-your-seat-tension grows from episode to episode! I care about these characters, about their lives, and what happens to them. In my opinion this is the finest show to ever make it to TV. And let’s hope Sutter gets a bee in his bonnet to make a Sons movie, too! Would love to see the Reaper Crew flying in the wind up on the big screen! This is good entertainment.

As far as the “authenticity” of the Sons of Anarchy I have read comments in certain forums from authentic 1% club members who decry the sensationalism of the series and the portrayal of SAMCRO as an organized crime syndicate, thus by extension implying that all motorcycle clubs of “outlaw” status are likewise engaged in violent and organized criminal activity, which is not true. Are there some “criminal” elements of varying degree in motorcycle clubs? Undoubtedly. Are there some criminal elements in the financial institutions? Undoubtedly. But in the case of the clubs, one bad apple doesn’t spoil the whole.

To honestly understand “outlaw” motorcycle clubs a person must read “Out Bad” by Donald Charles Davis, available here on Amazon:

    Out Bad

Certain other bikers have gone back and forth over the appearances on the show of various Hells Angels members, including Sonny Barger, Rusty Coones, Chuck Zito, and regular cast member David LaBrava: is it good or bad for the biker community? There are good arguments both ways, but in the final analysis we have to remember that some of these men, while indeed active or inactive Hells Angels, are also trained actors who are portraying a role for money…it’s a job.

And we also have to remember that this show is entertainment, not a documentary. As Kurt Sutter himself has said, “This is a soap opera for bikers.”

“Sons creator Kurt Sutter has described the show as ‘an adrenalized soap opera, it’s bloody pulp fiction with highly complex characters.’” In other words, it’s not meant to be an accurate portrayal of real life; it’s a TV serial and should be treated as such.

Personally, I enjoy the show, but I’m able to separate the fact from fiction about the biker lifestyle in general and the “outlaw” biker lifestyle specifically. I understand the worry from active club members about those viewers who believe everything they see on TV is either real, or based on something that surely must be real, in the same way that readers project onto the author the events he describes in his novels as something that must have happened to him personally, even if the protagonist is a vampire from Mars.

It’s an argument to which I don’t see a satisfactory conclusion until someone from inside the clubs makes a truly unbiased documentary on the “outlaw” clubs, which to my knowledge hasn’t happened yet.

In the meantime enjoy Sons of Anarchy…for what it is: A soap opera for and about bikers.

Kurt Sutter, creator of “Sons of Anarchy,” has done a fine job developing the series. Things ratchet up with the feds, Hale (the honest police officer), the Irish and the individuals within SAMCRO, not to mention the Aryans who move into town to stir everything up.

Charlie Hunnam has grown into the character of Jax and made him more believable and human/likeable. I know I got a few dings from Jax worshippers (all women) in my review for Season 1, but I found him and his relationship with Maggie Siff’s character to be the weakest aspects. With the developments in Season 2, all my doubts are dispelled and there are tremendous amounts of growth in the storyline and the town of Charming’s denizens. Great guest stars include: Tom Arnold; Adam Arkin; Titus Welliver; Henry Rollins; Mitch Pileggi; and, of course, Ally Walker of “Profiler” fame.

My only issue is that there isn’t more interaction between SAMCRO members and the townspeople. Supposedly, these guys are generally well-liked by Charming residents, but I’d like to see evidence of that.

    Highly recommended.

The program is violent– there are times when I have difficulty watching it. But it’s worth it! Great show!
