Before using this tape, I was using the “Packaging” tape variety. I chanced upon this type when I ran out of tape one day and had to grab one at the local supermarket. I like this one better after using it. On the paper core of this “moving” tape, the words “mailing and storage” are printed. I guess “moving and storage” and “mailing and storage” both refer to the same tape. The reason this tape is better is because it sticks to mailing boxes better than the “packaging” tape, which sometimes lifts itself off the cardboard box. I had to apply another layer of that tape at 90 degrees sometimes to the first layer to make sure it sticks. The “packaging” tape seems to stick better to tape than to boxes. This tape is also thinner, and clearer, so that it weighs less and I can tape over the address label without obscuring it. The lighter weight makes a difference because if you are just 0.1 ounce over the limit of, say, one pound or two pounds, you need to pay the higher postage rate of the next weight limit. The difference can be as high as 2-3 dollars or about the same price as a 54 yard roll of this tape! Highly recommended!

This and the #2120 (transparent duct tape) by 3M are RUBBER- and LATEX-FREE! GREAT product! Tape is clear and strong for packaging and regular taping use.

It’s a little strange writing a review about Scotch Packaging Tape. What’s to say? I always wish people would include the price they paid so I can compare current to past price – so I paid $10.99 for the 4 roll package. It comes off the roll cleanly instead of gumming up and making it hard to get the tape off the roll as other brands have done – even when a roll is found in the back of a drawer years later. The tape is hardy and doesn’t break unless I cut it. I’d rather have a strong tape I have to hunt down a knife or scissors for than one that tears using hands. I’ve applied it to heavy moving boxes and never had the tape fail even after being on the moving box for years – both top and bottom of boxes stay safely sealed. The tape never fails to stick to any surface I’ve applied it to including cardboard, KitchenAid plastic bins, large envelopes, mending various plastic items, and so much more.

Other people think Scotch Heavy Duty Shipping tape is great. There must be a variety of quality control in this product since I received a six pack which apparently has little glue or has been through some situation which rendered the glue worthless. Unfortunately I purchased it a few months ago and I probably can’t return it. Enjoy the video.

Great Packing Tape, July 4, 2009

This is a strong heavy duty packing tape. It won’t curl up like the cheap ones. It also does not fly away and stick to something else if you are not quick enough when cutting it.

We go through lots of packing tape in our home, and this is by far, among the best.

    Updated November 2012

I found another great Scotch brand packing tape that is much more affordable. Scotch Long Lasting Moving & Storage Packaging Tape, 1.88 Inches x 54.6 Yards, 4 Rolls (3650-4). I use packing tape mainly for binding my paper recyclables. This works very well. I also use it for shipping and it performs well too. The item I am reviewing Scotch Heavy Duty Shipping Packaging Tape, 1.88 Inches x 54.6 Yards, 3 Rolls (3850-3) is indeed a STRONGER, heavier tape. But I actually prefer the “Log Lasting Moving” tape. It is not as thick, so it is easier to cut. And on some surfaces (mainly corrugated boxes), it actually adheres better. Here is the link to the tape I’m using now.

    Doesn’t stick, November 15, 2011

I read the negative reviews for this tape but since they were several months old, and the 3M company representative had responded to them, I took a leap of faith and hoped that Amazon’s stock had been replaced and the problem resolved.
Not so. I purchased four rolls of this tape, and so far one has absolutely NO adhesion, and the other I would rate as barely sticky. I got these for a little over two dollars a roll which was a great price, but I would have been fuming if I paid the $6-$7 these cost in retail stores and had the same problems.
For a company like 3M, which generally sells some of the best products, to have such a lapse in QC and allow this type of inferior product to hit the market is sad. I will not be purchasing this tape again, or any 3M brand packaging tapes for a while, in the hopes that they correct this problem.
