Roommates

Roommates

Thomas Maxwell figured that starting college was a good time to stop living with his mother. He and his best friend moved into a place with a couple of other guys. But the bachelor pad life didn’t suit Thomas, especially when he discovered he was living with stoners and slobs. Then they needed another roommate, and never expected Cassie, the Golden Girlfriend of a local drug kingpin. And Thomas never expected to become friends with Cassie, and then become more than friends—almost sisters.

Young man changes from boy to girl under the influence of a girlfriend. Turns out he is intersex (Woman with a clitoris shaped like a penis) Mom is totally okay with his change and he eventually gets a boyfriend. No sex here. Actually a pretty good story for someone who is intersex. No conflict, just the story of someone changing from boy to woman.

Roommates is the story of Thomas Maxwell. He moves out of his mother’s house to live with some male friends. He doesn’t fit in well with them but it isn’t until they get a female roommate that he has any clue why, or what it means. The roommate sees Thomas’s femininity and begins to draw it out. Thomas begins to transition to Jessica, comes out to Mom and discovers she is actually intersex.

It’s a good representation of the trans/intersex person. It does a fair job of explaining transition, talking about coming out and other issues that such people exist.

The book was well written and the characters were believable. My only real complaint is that the story is long and drags in places. There’s nothing wrong with the story itself – in fact that’s the problem – there’s no real problems with her transition or anything. Nobody seriously rejects her, there’s no deep internal anguish over the decision, in short there is no drama. There isn’t much to bring the reader back, no mystery to solve or adversity to triumph over. If you are simply curious about trans and intersex people, this book will help satisfy that. If you are looking for an action driven plot, you may want to look elsewhere.
