Great Price, But Check the Paint & Consider the Hangers, June 9, 2012

I’m a photographer on a tight budget who shoots small and square, so when I need frames for gallery shows, this is the model I go with. You can’t beat the price, especially since it comes with a pre-cut double mat. (I’ve never had any issues with mat quality, for what it’s worth.) They look great and they’re always on sale, whether you buy on-line or in retail stores.

    There are two caveats, however:

    1) Check the paint. When shopping in stores, I’ve found that there are often little nicks in the paint, especially on the sides on the frames. I’m pretty positive it’s due to the way Gallery Solutions packages the frames for shipping in bulk. Due to this, always inspect the frame before buying — or, if you’re ordering on-line, order far enough in advance that you can make an exchange if necessary.

    2) Consider the hangers. If you’re a typical homeowner or someone else without reason to be picky regarding how to hang, you’ll probably really like the plastic sawtooth inserts that go into the corners of the frame’s reverse side. They’re very convenient, especially if you want to adjust the angle after hanging. However, if need screw-eyes or nails, just bear in mind that these frames are made of composite wood, so it’s a bit of a pain to hammer into them without screwing something up. You’ll sometimes get minor buckling of the paint in the back — nothing visible in the front, but still, it’s there.

Again, I consider these my go-to frames, and they’re more than acceptable for my purposes. I don’t mind taking a little bit of extra time to fiddle with getting a screw-eye to go into composite wood if it saves me $20+ over another frame. And even though maybe 3/10 of these that I find on shelves in stores have little paint nicks, it’s nothing that a quick in-aisle inspection or a simple on-line return can’t handle. Still, I feel like they’re important enough considerations that pointing them out to other shoppers seems only fair.

In summary: Get these very inexpensive but solid frames, but give them a look-over before you put them on your wall.

As a pretty avid amazon.com shopper I have had a wide variety of item shipped to my door step without a problem. I bought 2 of these frames because I had a old calendar with beautiful pictures and phrases I wanted to reuse. Well, my packaged arrived on time….only one of my two frames was bubble wrapped. The other frame’s glass was shattered all over the box. I filled out all the returning an item for the shatter glass frame and packaged it up (mind you I put all the broken glass in a brown bag because I didn’t want anyone to get cut). After I finished that I got on with my project opened the frame from the back and carefully slide it out. I got all 12 x 12 pictures from last years calendar in the frame and closed. Imagine my dismay when I flipped the frame over and realized 2 corners were chipped! The corners weren’t horrible, but had brown showing. I wanted the frames for an upcoming event and after packaging the only frame up I didn’t want to do the same for the other one all over again. I macgyvered it by coloring the two corners with black sharpie. I figure once I have it hanging on the wall no one will notice. It will forever be my reminded not to order picture frames off Amazon.com. Hopefully the replacement for the other one is wrapped multiple times in bubble wrap!

I have ordered 2 of these so far and both had cracked glass. I am just going to run to Michaels so I don’t have to deal with returning it again for the third time.
