My son love to bbq just like his dad!,
I got this for my 2 yr old son in addition to some other M&D food items and this one has been a great hit!
He has played w/ it every day since we received it, and everytime my husband bbqs – my son pulls this out and starts to “bbq” w/ it
There are several good things about this toy that I really like:
1) colors – you have the red tomatoes, green bell peppers, white/pink shrimp, white onions, brown kabobs…
2) shapes – round tomatoes, square kabobs, etc.
3) cutting feature – some of the pieces (bell peppers / onions) are held together by velcro and a knife is included for cutting – which is actually very satisfying for my son! he loves to “cut” his food.
4) bead/stringing – it includeds 2 skewers so it’s good for his fine motor skills to skewer the veggies/meat onto the skewers into different patterns
5) finally, it comes w/ a set of tongs that my son had a little trouble w/ at first, but now he uses it to pick up pieces of food and “bbq” it on the grill.
Overall, the play food is very visually appealing and realistic looking, and my son enjoys playing with it and creating different combinations on his skewers. He likes using the tongs and likes the bbq set – everytime he touches it – he goes “hot hot hot!” I would recommend this toy.

Great for young toddlers and older kids too.,
I hesitantly bought this at Toys R Us because my 12yo son wanted it and convinced me that his 17mo baby sister would enjoy it too. After we got home and opened it up, I was very pleased. Aside from the pretend play, there is so much educational value for a toddler in this particular set. The food is “skewered” using the skewers, much like lacing beads but a lot easier because the skewer is stiff. The onion and green pepper can actually be separated into 3 pieces and are like a mini-puzzle to put back together. The tongs are held together by string which seems a little flimsy, however I can see the safety aspect to prevent pinched fingers. The grill part also doubles as plastic slide-on lid so that all the stuff can be securely stored inside the “grill” until next time. This is by far one of the best M&D food sets that I’ve seen.

very shoddy quality (and, why no “coals” included?),
I very rarely write reviews (as I work full time and raise a toddler). But, I am so disappointed with this product that I feel compelled to write. I had read all the reviews that rave about this grill, so when I saw it in a local store (for $20), I immediately purchased it for my two year son. He loves kitchens and cooking toys and we have other Melissa & Doug products that I have been pleased with, so I assumed this would be great. Unfortunately, it is the worst quality child’s toy we have ever purchased. The “coals” are a glued on picture at the bottom of the box; the picture is glued on crooked, with tears and bubbles. The grill top is very thin plastic that doesn’t fit into the slots on the box, so it’s constantly buckling in. (I’m surprised at the review that says her children have stood on it without it breaking; I can’t imagine that, unless maybe hers is of a different quality). The paint on the box is chipping. It’s all just VERY POORLY made. Also, I’m surprised that they didn’t think to add a couple of painted wooden charcoal pieces to actually allow kids to play with the grill. As is, this is basically a cheaply made box with a couple of Melissa & Doug foods in it. I do not recommend.
