Look! Look! Look! at Sculpture

Look! Look! Look! at Sculpture

After sneaking into a museum, three tiny mice discover that sculptures can be big or little, textured or smooth, and made with different materials. Some stand alone, others are in a group, and still others move. The mice look at the front, the back, and the sides of a slate sculpture by Barbara Hepworth. They see shapes, and shapes within shapes. They think, feel, and then create their own sculptures. Wallace has integrated photographs of real sculptures into her cut-paper artwork to point out t

This book is a story about 3 mice who go exploring in an art museum. They are looking for a piece of sculpture found on an invitation, and then realize they can use it to make other art. The pictures in the book are of mixed medium; the mice are made out of felt and cloth, so the book has a very artistic feel to it, the mice talk about the sculpture, and even sketch the piece. This book would be a good gift for a young artist that is learning about drawing, sketching, and seeing the world through an artist’s eye. This is not your typical kid’s picture book, which is a great thing!

A Child’s Opportunity to Learn about Art, December 13, 2012

Children are sponges when it comes to learning and “Look! Look! Look! at Sculpture” written and illustrated by Nancy Wallace with Linda Friedlaender is a fantastic way to provide information on sculpture and art for them to soak up.

This book is recommended for children ages 5 to 8, however I think children as young as 3 or 4 can be read “Look! Look! Look! at Sculpture” and shown the pictures because they already will be learning the shapes.

This book has terrific illustrations of the various types of sculpture for comparisons. Wallace and Friedlaender use three mice on a trip to a museum to guide a child on the adventure of learning about sculpture. By looking closely the mice discover ordinary shapes are used in different combinations to create sculpture. By breaking down art into simple shapes; circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles, a child will learn that art is not complicated. The authors demonstrate how taking these shapes and giving them dimension (depth) a form can be produced, which is what sculpture is all about.

The last pages of the book show children how they can be creative as well and produce their own sculptures. The authors show how combining circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles cut from construction paper or made from clay a child can create their own works of art.

I thing this book is a fun way to learn about sculpture and art in general as well as sparking an interest to take a hands on approach to sculpture. Therefore, I give it 5 Stars.

I have a 3 year old grandson and was at first concerned it may be a little too advanced. I found this not the case. He got right in to the adventure. While some of the nuances may not understood he got it and we had fun with it. He will grow into this book more, but for now it is a fun reader.

After watching Ancient Aliens, I wanted an Easter Island statue for our garden railroad. I looked at all of them available and this is the best. It looks good, has good weight to it, is durable resin (but still looks good), and looks fabulous on the G scale garden railroad too! We adore “Fred”. This is a good item.

Good size, good weight, good quality. This was the perfect addition to my work desk; Fred (the Moai head) now watches over my cacti plants and keeps them company while I’m away. I do have plans to make a plaster cast or something similar using this, and making limited runs of cement duplicates for my garden, my home desks, living room, garage, and kitchen/dining room.

*insert evil plot to take over the world with Moai heads*

In all seriousness, from what I’ve seen this is by far the best Moai head you can buy (unless you want something really small or ridiculously huge).
