Will change how you use the iPad, April 30, 2012

Having seen this keyboard/case a few weeks ago online I’d been waiting for it to finally be released. I was fortunate that the Best Buy local to my current client had one in stock this evening.

First off I will say this kayboard will change how I use the iPad. I’ve been considering getting a Macbook Air for use while chatting with friends and doing e-mail and documents. This keyboard has eliminated that need for me and I couldn’t be happier with the quality of the product.

It’s best to “dock” your iPad in landscape mode as you will here an audible click when everything is just right. The keyboard can be used in portrait mode though the iPad is slightly less secure in that orientation due to its lack of magnets. In landscape mode I am able to pick both items up as a single unit which is very handy.

The keyboard is sufficient given its compact size. I am writing this review using the keyboard with average typing speed. I might get a bit more speed were I in front of my iMac. Likewise I am sure an Apple keyboard would yield slightly better results but it isn’t nearly as portable as this unit.

When done one tilts the iPad forward, pulls it out and then attaches it to the hinge on the back of the keyboard. The pieces then fold together and become one sharp looking piece of tech. When closed the iPad does turn off once the magnets on the front of the keyboard meet those on the iPad.

I do have two issues with the keyboard and only one of them is really Logitech’s fault.
    1. When using an external keyboard the iPad stops auto-correction and auto-punctuation. It took me a while to start using the shift key and remember periods. (I left any typos in on purpose to show there could be a few issues with spelling when typing as fast as an external keyboard allows.

    2. The rubber pads on the front of the keyboard are meant to protext the iPad when closed. Problem is they can also get in the way when typing.

Aside from those two issues it is a bit weird typing on a keyboard with out more of a palm wrest. I suppose it’s not reasonable to expect such a mobile keyboard to have the palm wrest space of a laptop. In addition it does take a while to remember that the lack of a track pad means you need to be tapping the screen.

Overall I am very pleased with my purchase and can’t wait to get it home and integrated into every day use.

Basically any keyboard for the iPad turns an elegant tablet into a more or less clunky laptop. But if you are over 40, touch type and use the iPad for taking notes, producing documents or sending more than texty emails, chances are that a keyboard is an essential accessory. I used the regular Apple bluetooth keyboard for years – nice device, types well, but its separateness defeats the purpose. Recently I’ve purchased the ClamCase, the ZaggFolio, and the Logitech Ultrathin desperately looking for the best compromise. The ClamCase was heavy and unusuable – the keys are sticky and the reviews that mention how the wristpad blocks the space bar are absolutely right; you just can’t type on the damn thing. The ZaggFolio has a very nice keyboard, but the case adds considerable bulk and weight, and it’s a minor chore to remove the iPad. The Logitech Ultathin is by far the best of the lot. Its magnetic latch, aluminum back, thinness and light weight preserve the design integrity of the iPad as well anything one can imagine. When serving as a screen cover, the ensemble feels very iPad-like, with minimum added bulk and weight. The keyboard, while not quite as crisp as the Zaggfolio, works flawlessly for me (and I have big hands). The magnetic latch is very slick, so it’s more of a pleasure than a chore to attach or disattach the iPad from it. It works well from a lot of different typing angles; it supports and balances the tablet with remarkable security for such a light device; and the keyboard is quieter than most laptop keyboards.

Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover – A Real Pleasure, May 26, 2012

This is the 3rd keyboard I have bought for my iPad. The first one was a Kensington. The Kensington works well and has a nice feel. It’s only problem is that it is a “Portfolio Type” and is too bulky for my tastes. The second was a Boxwave at a moderate price. What a nightmare! Dont buy it. Keep saving until you can afford this one. I thought at first $100 was a bit steep for a keyboard, but then I bought the best iPad 3 that is available, why not keep trying til I get the keyboard I want. This is it. It has a great feel and works great. I can sit it on my lap and type just as fast as if I were typing on my PC keyboard. The magnetic latch that holds the keyboard in the slot for upright use is strong enough to lift the iPad and keyboard all at once just by lifting the ipad. The magnetic latch that holds the iPad and the keyboard together for storage also works like a charm. I love this keyboard. The only thing that I could find at all wrong with this keyboard is the Micro USB charging cable. When they say micro they not only mean the type of cable, but the length as well. It can’t be more that 18″ in length. Luckily I have one that is 4′ in length and a couple of 6′ length ones ordered. Other than that this keyboard is just shear pleasure. At the $100 price, you expect Quality and that is just what you get! This is MY KEYBOARD!!
This keyboard is very easy to sync. Turn it on. Go to settings on iPad, ensure bluetooth is turned on, wait a few second until you see “Logitech Ultrathin KB Cover” in Devices and tap on it, In a few seconds it will say connected and you are ready to go! It stays synced too and when you turn the keyboard off, and then turn it on again for use it is just there!

L OVE THIS KEYBOARD !!!! Buy it and you will make yourself proud!
