This book is a wonder to look at and a delight to read. The text is short and brief but wonderfully poetic, with a gentle, rhythmic rhyme-scheme. It will keep all ages entertained… from the fussy 2-year old to the more sophisticated 4-year old. (Can you tell I’ve read to a wide range of children?) The best thing about this book is the illustrations. They are wonderfully spooky without being creepy or scary. And they tell their own story! That’s right! If you pay attention to the illustrations, you see there is a whole other story taking place underneath the text. Totally cool! And the understory is really uplifting and sweet, softening the scariness of Halloween. As a lover of Halloween books, I can not recommend this book enough. It is one of my favorites and it is the story that my 4-year old daughter asks for again and again and again.. even in July!

Greg Couch’s big, broad illustrations, with their pearly moon-lit glow, cleverly straddle the line between reality and fantasy, where leaves blowing through the sky could be broomstick-riding witches, and where windows are the glowing eyes of an ominous house. But lest you think it’s all tease, the real spooks arrive soon enough for a riotous conclave that impresses the wide-eyed children on their trick or treat rounds.

Highly recommended for the 4-8 age group.

I have to agree with another reviewer that the poem seems to get lost in the back of the beautiful illustrations.

Should you buy this for a young reader, however, there are very few words in this book which makes it suitable for ages 4-7 (at best). With that said, the images are captivating and the illustrator depicts everyone’s favorite Halloween creatures/icons marvelously within this book!

Honestly, the pictures are enough to buy this book alone. I recommend this if you want to buy this for a young child who is being introduced to reading-it is simply enchanting.
