Getting Hotter (Out of Uniform)

A good bad boy is hard to find.

An Out of Uniform story.

Seth Masterson has been lusting over Miranda Breslin since the moment he saw her on a Vegas stage. Now that he’s been asked to watch out for her as she opens a dance studio in San Diego, he’s all over it, figuring it’s his chance to get her in his bed. Except the stubborn single mom seems determined to deny their crazy-sizzling sexual chemistry. In typical SEAL fashion, Seth makes it his personal mission to prove her wr

I have to say I become a little more of a fan of Elle Kennedy with each new book of hers I read. Her latest in the Out of Uniform series, Getting Hotter, is no exception. Our hero, Seth, is a hot (duh!) Navy SEAL who is funny, sarcastic and doesn’t like (terrified of?) kids. Our heroine, Miranda, is a single mom who owns a dance studio and is strong willed and fierce about her kids.

The first Elle Kennedy book I read was Midnight Rescue: A Killer Instincts Novel, which I loved. This is the second of Kennedy’s Out of Uniform books that I’ve read; the first was the predecessor to this one, Feeling Hot, which I also really enjoyed. I believe this book is categorized as Erotica, but I have to say it felt more contemporary romance to me. Yes, there’s hot and steamy sex, but it doesn’t happen in the first ten pages or even the first few chapters. There really wasn’t anything steamier than you’d find in a Susan Donovan or J.R. Ward novel. My understanding of the earlier books in the series, even the one I’d read, was that they were more risque and contained a lot of threesomes. So, if that’s what you were looking for with this book, you’ll be disappointed. Not that the sex wasn’t hot, because it definitely was, but it was just Seth and Miranda.

However, I very much enjoyed the build up of the romance, they didn’t fall into bed together right away and I love when that happens in books. I get to know the characters and I’m more titillated and happy when they finally do have sex. That aspect of erotica is definitely love/hate with me, I wish there was more build up before sex, even thought I’m reading the novel for the sex (I know, totally contradictory, go figure) so this novel was for sure in my wheelhouse. Plus, the book took place over months, which made the love story more believable.

The conversations in this novel were fantastic. Between Seth and Miranda, with the kids, with Seth and his friends, Miranda and her coworkers, Miranda and Dylan, all of it was totally natural and real. It was funny (gotta love Seth and Miranda’s discussion of Birthday Oral vs. Holiday Oral and pretty much every conversation with little Sophie) and I felt like I really got to know the characters. There was also great development of some secondary characters, especially Dylan. The hottest aspects of the book, for me, were the scenes featuring Dylan and a bit of m/m action. I loved him in Feeling Hot, his scene with Cash was, yes, HOT, and am hoping for his book next as I love me some m/m/f which I can totally foresee in his future. Please?? Aiden and Claire perhaps?

There wasn’t a whole lot to the story outside of the development of the characters and their relationships. There wasn’t a mystery to solve or bad guys to defeat or world saving to do. Seth is a SEAL, but we’re not really taken into that aspect of his life. Miranda isn’t really overcoming anything or down on her luck, she’s working hard but has her life pretty much where she wants it professionally and psychologically. The only thing really missing for her is a partner to share her life with. As a result, this novel is solely centered on relationships and Seth’s emotional growth. I was okay with that because I really liked the characters, but readers who enjoy more action to their stories may feel differently.

I must vehemently disagree with all the reviews that were disappointed in Seth for taking so long to warm up to Miranda’s kids. As I recall it was until about 2/3 of the way through the book that he remained standoffish with the kids and there was really a very good reason for his behavior. I liked the way the author handled his difficulty with being around kids and I also really enjoyed how strong of a female character Miranda was. She didn’t roll over on her insistence that she could only be with a guy who could love both her and her kids. Love it when female characters remain steadfast to their ideals even if it means they don’t get the guy.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book and would gladly recommend it! I gave it four stars only because I’m very stingy with that fifth star, you gotta rock my world to get it, but I’m very much looking forward to more books by Elle Kennedy.

“…I absolutely love the engaging, red-hot Out of Uniform series….”, January 27, 2013

Navy SEAL Seth Masterson has had a thing for former showgirl Miranda Breslin since the first moment he saw her. Now that she’s moved to San Diego and his mother has ordered him to keep an eye out for her, Seth thinks it’s the perfect time to seduce the beautiful dancer.

Miranda, a single mom with two jobs, doesn’t want any entanglements. Particularly not with a man like Seth; she’s had her fill of bad boys, thank you very much. Then her apartment floods and Miranda and her children temporarily move in with Seth. The attraction between her and Seth is getting too hot for Miranda to resist. But even as she gives in to Seth’s advances, Miranda has to wonder: Can she keep things between her and Seth strictly physical when he’s doing his best to capture her heart?

To borrow the title of another one of Elle Kennedy’s Out of Uniform books, the heat is on in Getting Hotter. Ms. Kennedy knows how to write scorching sexual tension and boy does the tension reach new heights in the eighth Out of Uniform story.

Miranda is a heroine you have to love. She grew up fast at a young age when she gave birth to her twins. Miranda’s love for her children, her hardworking attitude, and her generous heart make it easy to adore her. Seth, in turn, is a lot rougher around the edges. I admit, he never really grew on me, something that’s never happened with any of Ms. Kennedy’s characters before. In the beginning of Getting Hotter, he doesn’t seem to want to understand Miranda’s responsibilities as a parent. His turnaround when it comes to his relationship with the twins, Jason and Sophie, wasn’t as organic as I’d have hoped, so it pulled me out of the story a bit. Still, I give high marks to Ms. Kennedy for making the romance between Miranda and Seth — and thus the ending of Getting Hotter — finish strong.

Stealing the show from Miranda and Seth is Seth’s roommate and fellow SEAL, Dylan. Dylan is funny, charming, sweet, and sexy as hell. Every single page he’s on sparks with energy, particularly those pages where he’s with the person I’m desperately hoping is his HEA. I won’t reveal who the object of Dylan’s interest is, but I might cry if Ms. Kennedy doesn’t pair them up because every single scene involving Dylan and this person is Off. The. Charts. HOT.

Getting Hotter is the eighth Out of Uniform book, but each story in the series can easily be read as a standalone. However, I defy you to read Getting Hotter and not be intrigued by the supporting characters, many of whom come from previous Out of Uniform tales. I absolutely love the engaging, red-hot Out of Uniform series. Every book Ms. Kennedy writes is a pleasure to read. While it may not be my favorite book in the overwhelmingly fantastic series, Getting Hotter is still a satisfying read. The only downside to Getting Hotter? I’m more impatient than ever to read Dylan’s book!

Well I was super excited for this book, I preordered it because I absolutely loved Cash’s book and was hoping Getting Hotter would be just as awesome. However after reading it, I was disappointed. I could not bring myself to care about Seth. In the previous book it was made clear that he didn’t like kids, so when I read the book description and learned his heroine was a mother with kids, I immediately thought I’d be reading about this tough sexy SEAL who slowly falls in love with 2 kids as well as the mother. Nope, that is not at all what I got, he pretty much ignores them till near the end. And of course, it’s explained why he was so stand off-Ish but to me it came across as too little too late. I understand why he didn’t feel comfortable around the kids but still, like I said before I just couldn’t bring myself to like or care about him. Especially because I thought Sophie and Jason were adorable, so it bugged me that Seth ignored them. ( another thing that just really bugged me was that he smoked around the children, it was a small detail, but smoking near children is one of my biggest turn offs, so please if you’re a smoker, don’t do it around the kids, thanks) Anyways Seth does come around eventually but by that point I didn’t really care. *shrugs* Anyways I read Cash’s story in one sitting but with this book, I found myself taking multiple breaks. So all in all, this book wasn’t bad and it wasn’t great, it was just okay. I will definitely continue following the series though, and I’m looking forward to reading more about Dylan and his partner. :)
