Valiant attempt, but still falls short, September 10, 2010

This is our third monitor and it seemed to offer exactly the features the others lacked, but it still falls short in critical areas that it touts as features.

We liked the display, the convenience of the belt clip caddy, the flexibility of the camera unit to bend over and get a good shot in the crib, decent wide angle lens, good balance of the transmitter (aided by the battery in the base), good audio pickup, didn’t seem to mess with the home WiFi, has an out of range warning that few offer (but which our Fisher Price audio monitor had and is an excellent feature IMHO), seeing battery level on both the transmitter and the receiver is cool, baby sleep timer if a nice feature, plenty of cord for the transmitter, good audio lights on the receiver, Easy on off for the monitor.

We hated: you can’t turn the volume down all the way (so I can go take care of crying baby while the wife sleeps), so I turn the receiver off. When I come back and turn the receiver back on, it makes a pretty little “bling” with the logo appearance. Which wakes up the wife. WTF? The highly touted Summer Infant Day & Night (SID&N) (which we had before this one) has a big fat button on top for the monitor- making it super easy to turn it on and off overnight. With this one, the video toggle is one of five buttons that are exactly the same size, shape and distance on the side of the receiver. The battery died in the receiver- without an alert, even though the manual says it’s supposed to give us an alert. And lastly- the reason we’re sending it back, is because we’ve become quite familiar with the “no signal” warning because we hear it all the time, in the house. Even in our bedroom right down the hall from the baby’s room. The SUD&N also had problems here. The Mobi before that, did not. Unlike the SID&N, I can’t change channels with this because it’s supposed to be finding the best frequency on its own.

We never even got around to using the battery powered transmitter feature. I was kinda disappointed by the “clip” which is more of a sleeve that the receiver slides into, and can easily slide out of. No “lock” in to the belt clip.

I was counting on this Fisher Price working as well as our Fisher Price analogue audio monitor that has been on for 2.5 years with nary a problem (knock wood). The Mobi (Mobi Mobicam Digital Wireless Video Monitor) had amazing range, but the receiver dies with no audible warning. No out of range warning. No belt clip. And the volume keeps turning itself off, so I couldn’t _RELY_ on the Mobi to be my baby monitor, which is what I need to do. We got the highly rated SID&N (Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor with 1.8″ Screen) which had amazing clarity, but awful 900 Mhz range. If it weren’t for the constant static interference, even in a spot that worked fine a moment ago and nobody in the house moved, we’d still have it. So we got this Fisher Price hoping the “digital” part of it would remedy the problems with the SID&N monitor, and the touted alarms would remedy the problems with the Mobi. We got the same bad range, and one of the alarms never materialized. So this is going back and we are in the hunt for another monitor. If you have a recommendation (or warning against other models) let me know with a comment. Best of luck!

I read the other reviews and agree for the most part. We’ve not had as much of a problem with the signal and our house is very large. I can work from my desk in the basement with the baby monitor next to my PC monitor and it has two signal bars with full video. THE KEY WAS TO MOUNT THE TRANSMITTER OVER THE CRIB, WHICH IS NEXT TO THE DOOR OF THE BABY’S ROOM. (The baby’s room is on the upper floor.)

The night vision display is nothing short of amazing. The audio quality is superb. There is never any interference or buzzing sounds, and as the other reviewer stated, it does not interfere with WI-FI signal.

The battery is short, indeed, when using full video. We switch to audio only sometimes to conserve battery when working outside and not constantly looking at the screen. Again, range is an issue. We have to keep the monitor in the garage, next to the house door.

For regular indoor use where you can have it plugged into AC, this is a sound investment. You will constantly marvel at its quality and usefulness. We only wish we had purchased this 18 months ago!!!
