Received this today and put it together, and just fired it up. As another reviewer observed, all parts present, unit well packed and undamaged. All the holes lined up well, and the bolts all fit well where they were supposed to.

It is easy to light, and seems to put out a respectable amount of heat. It is tall enough to be safe from hair lighting, yet not so tall that the heat is far from where it is needed. It is quiet, and the entire burner seems to light evenly with a nice blue flame. Most important, it seems safe to me. Reasonable build quality, a couple of safety features common to things propane, etc.

I am taking one star away for poor instructions. The print and pictures are very small and poorly labeled, and aside from using one’s logic and experience (which isn’t hard for this particular assembly), the instructions on which sized bolts to use where is virtually non-existent.

Still, happy with the purchase so far… It is what we needed at less than I thought I’d have to pay. And 2 day shipping was free with Amazon Prime.

Like other reviewers I found the directions to be bad even for the breed of low cost, low-price point, Chinese made products. That said, it is not rocket science and not terribly difficult to assemble. I had mine together in less than an hour working at half-speed and it contained all the parts, was packaged well and arrived undamaged. The metal body and wheels seem to be of reasonable quality while the top/heat reflector is beyond flimsy. I personally do not have enough experience with other similar products but I am skeptical the top will last. To be fair, it was less than $200 and not $600+ so perhaps the quality was consistent with the price. I purchased the manufacturers cover as well so I will keep my fingers crossed and update on the ultimate longevity of the heater.

ADDING another STAR for excellent year two performance.

Received the package in good condition. All the items, nuts, bolts, everything was in order. The instructions are very small print, but you can find the pdf instructions online at the Fire Sense web site to view or print them larger. Nothing missing in the box… the only thing I added were three larger washers for the reflector hood. That’s just me… because I may have to remove the reflector hood frequently for storage.

Follow the directions… use good tools… example: The instructions suggest a phillips screwdriver, but a larger-wider flathead screwdriver also works with the eight bolts that are combination philips/flat. I think the flat driver would provide more torque. The instructions suggest a variable wrench, but if you have a nice set of open-end/box end METRIC wrenches or METRIC ratchet wrench… that might work better for you.

I assembled it last night, bought a new propane tank and fired it up this evening. It lit on the first click of the starter. Love it when something carefully assembled works the first time. I kept it low flame, to allow the heater to temper at first, burn off oils, color the cylinder, then turned it up. It has a nice blue ring of flame, red cylinder wall and very very little noise. In short it works just like it should.

Great and cheap alternative for screen room, May 6, 2011

This review is from: Garden Creations JB5678 Outdoor 9-Foot Umbrella Table Screen, Black (Lawn & Patio)

We’ve had one of these for 2 or 3 years now. It’s a great and cheap alternative to a much more expensive screened room. We use this on our deck for our patio table set. My table is square, with 4 rocker chairs. It provides just enough coverage to get inside and to sit down. You must be careful with this, as the screening is not bulletproof, and the tube around the bottom could snag on decks with slivers (like mine). Take your time setting this up. It’s a bit tricky installing over the umbrella. I usually draw up the drawstring of the screen a bit, fit it over my partially opened umbrella and then slowly open my umbrella, working the top of screening evenly over it as I go. MAKE SURE you find the zipper opening, and line it up where you are going to walk into it beforehand. Takes a bit of adjusting, but once you’ve done it, it will be easier next time. Also, carefully lay your tubing in a circle where you think it should be, like the photo shows. Then, when you are filling with water, you can keep testing how full it is,(don’t overfill, it doesn’t need to be tight to do the job) and adjusting the tube to accommodate the water. Don’t make a habit of stepping on the tube. When filling, it’s best to allow enough space in the tube for one or two ‘footprints’ just in case you do step on it so it doesn’t burst.
This unit really does fit the bill for us, as it’s so much cheaper than a screened room. Remember, this is a 30$ item, not $300. Also, the ballast helps to keep our umbrella from blowing over. We rarely put the umbrella down unless severe storm and wind warnings.

“No instructions. Just warning to not over fill the base with water. Easily fits over our 9ft umbrella. Goes all the way down to the ground with room to spare. We couldn’t win the battle of the bugs without this product. ”

Thank Goodness No More Mosquitos!, August 11, 2010

Got this as a gift from our niece about two weeks ago. So far so good. The black net is easy to see through and has kept all the flies and mosquitos out perfectly. You do need two people to get it on because it has a cinch that you pull to tighten it over the top of the umbrella. It fits around our four chairs and two side tables with plenty of room (and thats with the umbrella and stand in the middle). I would recommend this product,it is easy to use, clean and works great. Oh….there was one probelm with the bottom hose that you fill with water to weigh the screen down. It had two small leaks, but I repaired them with the patches that you get for inflatable pools. The Amazon shipping did take a while, but it was worth the wait.
