A Perfect Father’s Day

A Perfect Father's Day

“I’m taking you out for Father’s Day,” Susie tells Dad. “First we’ll go for lunch.” “Good,” Dad says. “May I drive?” “Certainly,” Susie says. She chooses the restaurant, and pretty soon Dad can see that she’s filled this special day with treats–treats for both of them! When they get back home, Mom’s final surprise (that isn’t really a surprise at all) is a perfect ending for the perfect day.

    Quite Funny, February 24, 2004

This movie really is pretty funny. Crystal is always funny and Williams, well, what can I say… the guy is funny even if he’s not trying to be! Crystal plays a straight-laced lawyer while Williams plays a total psychotic, who really wants to believe he has a son so he’ll have a reason to stay partially sane.

This movie’s plot may be a bit thin, but who cares because the cast is great. The short version of the plot is that a worried mother recruits two men to find her runaway teenage son. How does she get them to agree to find him? She tells each of the men(obviously not thinking that they may run into each other while searching for the boy) that he is the father. This leads to a silly comic pairing.

There are all kinds of great things in this movie. Crystal and Williams are great together. Mel Gibson makes a cameo– watch closely because you might not recognize him!! The band Sugar Ray is also in the movie. Cool things like that!

This may not satisfy a hunger for laugh out loud, slap on the knee kind of funny, but it’s still funny, with a charming ending.

The movie is entertaining and a good way to spend about two hours. Robin Williams predictable. This was not one of his better performances. Billy Crystal’s performance was outstanding. I would not recommend this film for anyone under 15. There are some serious adult issues in it. It can be a bit heavy for younger viewers.

FUNNY! Williams and Crystal are great together, as always. Their cross-country chase to find their ‘son’ is hilarious. Look for a funny cameo by Mel Gibson as the ‘pierced’ guy. One more thing to add… Don’t miss out on seeing the original French version, LES COMPRERES, with Girard Depardeau… Equally hilarious.

I gave this book to my father for father’s day. It tells the charming story of a young girl and the relationship she has with her father. She wants to spend Father’s Day with her Dad doing all the things he loves. Instead they do the things she loves to do and like every good Dad he goes along and pretends they are his favorite things too. It seems like he’s thinking, “without her I wouldn’t be celebrating this day”. Any father would love to read this book to his child and cherish it as a gift.

I love this book! I always check books out of the library first to see if they meet my criteria for reading to my 4 y o daughter, and very few of them I end up buying- this one I will be buying. A spunky girl in shorts and a t-shirt plans and executes a day-long outdoor active adventure. The illustrations are hilarious – you can read the mind of the cat and the dad, who are peacefully relaxing until the energetic child arrives. I love how the dad acts in this book- very patient and loving, just BEING with his daughter, and I love his floral shirt! It just doesn’t get any better than this. Thank you Eve Bunting and Susan Meddaugh!

Since I was a young girl, my father read this to me every year on Father’s Day. It was our favorite book, especially since I could empathize with the daughter’s innocent self-centered demeanor. Once I could read, I would read it to him every Father’s Day. It became a tradition that lasted many, many years. I’m 23 now and out on my own, but I still have this tucked away in my bookshelf. A Perfect Father’s Day will always have a special place in my heart.
