One of the best Series yet!, June 25, 2011

Top Gear is my favorite show on TV by a mile. The 16th season might have been the best yet. The cover of this DVD set says it includes the Middle East and USA specials from December 2010 which is a huge relief. Two of my all time favorite episodes right there and very happy to hear that both will be in this DVD set. Watching James, Richard and Jeremy drive up the East Coast through NASCAR tracks, Washington D.C. and eventually up to NYC was entertaining to say the least. Much better in my opinion than the 2007 USA Special which had several scenes that were a bit much. The Middle East Special features the trio being left in Iraq in covertibles wearing bullet-proof vests because, well, it is Iraq. They then reenact the journey of the 3 Wise men which ends with them discovering a Baby Stig to replace Ben Collins, the previous Stig, who had been fired following the 15th Series. Those 2 episodes alone are enough to make me buy this set but there’s so much more. James driving NASA’s latest space exploration vehicle, a road-trip to Albania to find the perfect car for the mafia, a hilarious attempt to make a combine harvester into a Snow Plough, Richard racing a VW Bug from 1 mile in the air with a Porsche 911, Jeremy’s fantastic review of the fabulous Skoda Yeti, Clarkson’s race against God(actually the sun) and a hilarious episode featuring the UK Top Gear guys in a series of challenges against the Austrailian Top Gear hosts. In addition to all of this are reviews of the Ferrari F40, Porsche 959, Ferrari 599 GTO, Ariel Atom 500, Jaguar XJ, Pagani Zonda R, BMW M3 Competition Pack and the Audi RS5 just to name a few. The celebrity interviews in this series are quite good featuring a hilarious Jonathan Ross in episode 3, the 4th episode with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and in the Season finale with John Prescott. If the cover isn’t lying, this DVD set will feature the 6 episodes from Series 16 plus the 2 specials from the end of 2010. In all 8 fantastic episodes of Top Gear. Definitely a must buy for any Top Gear fan.

Officially “Top Gear” is a long running automotive show on Britain’s BBC. In reality it is far much more. Hosted by 3 middle aged journalists with a shared passion for cars there is bombastic Jeremy, pedantic and detail oriented James and `happy puppy’ Richard, who is usually caught between the other two. 3 young men playing with cars would get boring but 3 middle aged men, acting like kids? That gets fun.

Although the men have a passion for cars they know the general population does not care about compression levels and cylinder heads and drive ratios, the general population wants to know if it is fun. Each show has several regular segments such as test driving some high performance, very expensive car at their test track, discussing car news, which can get a bit off topic and having celebrity guests which after a brief interview have to drive a lap on their test track to compare their driving skills to other celebrities who’ve already been there. The more memorable parts of the shows though are their adventures outside the studio when they try to show the `superiority’ of cars to other forms of transport, usually in some silly race or explore a region in cars or most ludicrously, `improve’ cars-something that usually results in crashes or fires or bickering or all of the above.

This season really had a lot of really good bits on it. Among the stand out challenges in this season are a trip though the middle east from Iraq to Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank (three wise men?), A drive up the east coast of the US starting among some very nice hillbillies in North Carolina and ending up racing through the concrete canyons of New York City, a chaotic drive through Norway in winter where they try to convert a summer farm harvester into a winter snow plow, Richard tries to prove his beloved Porche 911 is more than a VW Bug on steroids and a road trip through Albania where Bentley withdrew their loaner car at the last moment, resulting in the team replacing it with a Yugo- It’s got all the basics, 4 wheels- which they called `the Bentley” in such commentary as “I can’t believe Bentley would charge so much for such poor handling.” Pretty much ensuring no manufacturer would treat them like that again.
In the end you will learn a lot about very expensive cars, that can also be applied to the more mundane things you and I drive and have a very good laugh along the way.
