Covers a lot of territory in a small book!,
There are tons of books about photography, but most are either for beginners or very advanced photographers. The books for beginners seem to lack enough details to really make a difference in my photos. On the other hand, the more advanced books sometimes leave me in the dust because of terms they use. For example, I read a lot about RAW files before I ever understood what they were. This book bridged the gap by offering a lot of important details without confusing language.
I was impressed by the number of topics that were addressed in a medium length book. I was initially skeptical when I reviewed the Table of Contents before purchasing this book but was pleased to see that everything was adequately covered.
It is very well written and easy to follow. There were no obvious typos, poor grammar, or bad punctuation. It was refreshing to not have these distractions.
PROS
*I liked the structure and flow of the book.
*Technical terms and concepts were explained in simple language.
*Some of the more important topics (like exposure) were covered in several chapters. This made it easier to absorb the information and reinforced the previous chapter.
*I was also pleased to see that it was about more than just taking pictures. It also addressed equipment, photo-editing software, and printing.
*Though I have been taking pictures for most of my life, this book clarified some things about digital photography that I had missed. For example, I never considered that Photoshop and similar software replaced the darkroom. Now that it has been pointed out, it seems obvious but I just never thought about it before.
*The information about Lightroom was very helpful. I had no idea what it did or why I need it.
*There were many things that I liked about this book but the idea of learning photography from the same people who teach the pros was really valuable. I think I would have been too intimidated to even consider this idea before reading this book.
*The bold caps used for important terms was a great idea. It was really easy to backtrack and find things.
CONS
*I wish the author had offered more specific ideas and photo examples of typical situations like landscape photography. What constitutes “good composition” or maybe something about lighting.
*He talked about Lightroom and Photoshop, but it would have been nice to see some examples of before and after to better illustrate how they are used and how they differ.
*I don’t plan to be a professional, so I might have skipped over the last few chapters. I’m glad that I didn’t. The info on creating a website was very useful. I think he should have been more clear about the value of the material for everyone — not just professionals.
I would recommend this book for anyone with an interest in photography. If you are a complete newbee you should have no trouble following the discussion. If you are a seasoned photographer, you still might not be familiar with some of the software mentioned or the ProPhotoRGB color space. A valuable reference book that I could have used years ago.
