Good, but not perfection, June 11, 2009

A great little digital TV with a crisp, clear picture. Perfect for traveling or in case of a power failure. The remote is almost too small to be useful, and I was a bit disappointed with the battery life when fully charged (about 1.5 hr.). All-in-all … the best presently on the market.

Pros: The picture is sharp and clear. Stand has handy cradle to carry remote. Multiple interfaces.
Cons: Short battery life 1.5 hours max. This TV touts capabilities with MP4 video files. I have tried hundreds of MP4 files with frustratingly limited success. The files are extremely slow to load. The remote is completely unresponsive during this phase. Videos play back in slow motion with no sound. I have searched for recommended bit rate specifications etc. but have found none. The TV functionality is okay but almost every channel displays a “Channel Blocked” screen requiring four zeros to be entered each time. There is nowhere to disable this in the menu. Local stations in my area are 30-40 miles away. This renders the small included antenna virtually worthless unless I drive to the roof of a parking garage or ride the elevator to around 10 floors up somewhere. This is a DTV reception problem which can exist with any DTV. TV audio is clear but volume level is very low even at the highest setting. This model seems like a rush to production more than a well engineered path to high performance. I would not recommend this product to anyone with less than infinite patience.

Pretty. CTA Digital TV-P7 7-Inch Portable LCD TV Bought it as a gift and made a big hit, but pay for that moment daily by going through the laborious procedure of rescanning the stations (with my fingers crossed). The scanner drifts. It can zero in on all stations then lose them a couple minutes later. It can’t even be relied on to get back to the last channel viewed. By then, all of the channels may have been lost except a public radio station that shows a picture of the L tracks (Chicago). Instruction book? Forget it! I’ve used it’s antennae, rabbit ears, one of those new antennas, and finally ran a cable from my roof antennae, through the basement, up the kitchen wall to this new TV. As I said, it was a gift. It still drifts! I bought this just before the digital changeover in order to be prepared. So I’ve had it almost two months. If I knew how to get a refund, this thing would be on its way back tomorrow. Other TVs in my house, with converter boxes, and each with a different kind of antennae work fine. Why 2 stars instead of none? When it works, it’s beautiful.
