The Best Flags Made, May 10, 2012

I work as a volunteer at the Fort Custer National Cemetery on the flag crew..We maintain the largest permenant display of American flags on earth (152 flag poles that line the entrance). We also incinerate thousands of flags every year…It has been my experience that Annin flags have the best construction, longest lasting color and are the most durable flag on the market. Annin is the oldest flag maker in the country and have provided the flags that covered Lincoln’s casket as well as the first flag on the moon. I have experimented with many flags over the years at my home (on a farm with high winds and full sun) and hands down there isn’t a better flag made in my opinion.

    Poorly stitched, October 19, 2010

The flag that I received was stitched so unevenly where the flag itself goes up into the white strip of material where the grommets are (the header?) that when the flag was hung, the resulting irregular shape was clearly apparent.

I called the flag manufacturer to see if this was to be expected and the rep said I could either return it to Amazon or send it to them and they would fix it, so I sent it back to Amazon and ordered another. The second one just arrived and unfortunately the material, again, goes up into the header unevenly, but not nearly as badly as the first flag. Material next to both grommets is crimped as well. I am wondering whether these were irregular ‘seconds’ from the manufacturer or whether that’s just the way they are made, without much attention to detail. I wouldn’t think it would be too difficult to sew a straight line making sure the material is all the way up into the header, but apparently it is. Plus I would expect quality control to catch these errors before being sent out for sale.

Other than that particular complaint, the material feels like it would be long lasting.

*Update* 10/27/10: STRIKE THREE! Decided to give it one more try, so I exchanged it for another hoping to get a good one. When I received it, it looked good initially, but closer examination revealed frayed material at the border between the blue field and the stripes in at least two areas. It looks like this material didn’t get doubled under before stitching, exposing it beyond the stitched border with loose threads hanging from it. Looks like it could easily come unraveled. There’s also about a one inch section where material is kind of bunched up in that same stitched border area.

Sooo, this last one is going back to Amazon and I don’t think I’ll be ordering another from this manufacturer.

Amazon’s customer service in addressing my concerns has been excellent, as usual.

This is a very nice flag. It flies easily in a light breeze, and is well stitched. I will buy this brand again.
