What a great read. This is a story for teens as well as adults. A very well written vampire love story that’s full of intrigue right to the end. Seventeen-year-old Amber starts a new job as a housekeeper in an old mansion in Scotland, but she knows nothing about housekeeping and hates cleaning. She thinks household chores are a waste of time, so she’s quite happy that the house is sparkling clean. Instead of working, Amber spends most of her time drooling over her new boss and snooping around the house. But there are secrets she doesn’t know about the people that come to the house, and she has no idea there’s a unique bond between her and one of them, or that she’s been summoned there by a vampire.

Not long after she arrives at her new job, her brother turns up. He tells her about a stash of jewels hidden in the woods close by. They decide to steal them and run away to start a new life, but on the night of the robbery, her brother disappears. Scared, Amber goes looking for him. She doesn’t find him, but stumbles upon a hut in the forest as well as the hidden treasures. Though she steals the jewels, she doesn’t know they’re actually the first prize in a paranormal race organised by a blood-crazed succubus demi-goddess. Suddenly, Amber has the ability to travel to other worlds and communicate with so-called ghosts, but every paranormal being out there is hunting for her. Amber doesn’t know it, but someone out there is drawn to her blood, and they are determined to have it.

Amber is hilarious and a bit of a klutz sometimes, but she’s very endearing. The story kept me turning the page in anticipation of what’s going to happen next, but I could never guess. I highly recomend this book and I give it a five-star rating. Well deserved too. A great read that I finished in one day and night.

I really liked the description of this book, unfortunately the story did not live up to my expectatations. The beginning of the book starts out OK, you get the basic idea of where Amber is in life–short on cash, feeling insecure about taking a break from her less than entralled boyfriend Cameron. And then we start to get to the action . . . oh no, wait, we don’t. She goes to start this job at a house (which is barely described), and where her employer is no where to be found. And even weirder than her absent employer, is her apparent acceptance of this. Really? She doesn’t find it incredibly odd that there is no one to tell her what her hours are, what her work entails, where everything is, or anything at all??? It just isn’t believable.

Another completely lacking area is the characters themselves. One moment Aiden (the employer and love interest) is distant and hard to pin down, and then next moment he is kissing Amber and obsessing over her. Their relationship is nonexistent throughout the book, they never discuss interests, hobbies, their pasts, or anything that would cause them to get to know each other. Basically the entirety of their relationship is spent with Aiden telling Amber that she is meant for him, and Amber telling him no, and then “joking” around. Amber is just as bad, which is really sad since she is the main character. Not only do we not get any consistent description of her, but the author is contantly changing Amber’s personality on us. One moment Amber is brave and willing to give-up her life for a virtual stranger, the next moment she is terrified, helpless, and naive, and then the next moment she is suspicious of everyone. I never could get a clear picture of who she was, or what she really wanted.

But the absolutely worst part of this book was the action, or lack thereof… SPOILER ALERT … When Aiden gets captured, Amber immediately makes a deal to get him out, and guess what, like magic, with no complications, he is freed. Then when she holds-up her end of the deal by going with the shades (who never are actually explained), and Aiden decides to go rescue her, guess what, again, no complications, they basically walk her out of a mountain full of their enemy. So you might wonder what fills the book, if not for action and plot? Corny, cheesy attempts at humor. Oh, it really is awful all the play on words and horrible “jokes” that fill the in between parts (most of the book).

I would like to say that the ending has some redemptive qualities, but it does not. The resolution is summed-up in two pages that, as usual, are in conflict with other parts of the book. Amber, is suddenly OK with everything that she has fought against the whole book, and Aiden and she are left to enjoy the sun.

I am sorry to say that this book was a complete waste, but it really was. I have not read any of the author’s other works, but based on this, I am not sure that I will, it really was that painful of a read. I would not recomend it and barely made it through myself.

This book reminds me of the Twilight novels. It is about supernatural creatures like vampires, and a human who gets involved in their lives. It is more about the relationships between the characters and how they develop than about the technical aspects of the types of supernaturals involved in the story. The main character Amber has a lot of good lines and without really knowing what she is doing – she has a lot of learning to do as she goes along – she controls how the story plays out. The book is the first book in a new series and it does a good job of establishing the situation and it has more than enough action to keep things interesting.

Before the Moon Rises (Book Two Ritter Werewolves) by Catherine Bybee, August 16, 2012

This review is from: Before the Moon Rises (Ritter Werewolves) (Kindle Edition)

This is a short, novella length story of about 70 pages.

The Ritters are a tight knit family. Close, loving and protective they use their difference as a way to protect the innocent. Unlike most of their kind, they have a choice to make, will they join in the family business taking on the life of a were, or will they play a supporting role and stay human.

Janet lives her life carefully. She is a registered nurse working in the E. R. of a local hospital. Not wanting to draw too much attention to herself, she keeps a low profile. Accustomed to dealing with both the mundane and the unusual in her job she is not easily rattled or surprised. Until her emergency room plays host to a man found naked and unconscious. While that in itself may not be all that rare, the fact that he is well fed, well cared for and amazingly good looking is.

Max has been on the hunt for a killer. Having joined the family business several years before he is not surprised when he finds himself on the receiving end of trouble. What is different, for him, is to wake up naked in the hospital with an attractive nurse about to insert a tube in him. A very attractive woman at that.

But Janet is in danger. Her life is about to become something she had not planned. She now has a stalker and needs protection she both wants and is repelled by.

With lot’s of action, a bit of mystery and a family saga that is compelling, Before the Moon Rises is fun, romantic and mysterious. A great beach read, or a good short read on a lazy afternoon.

A Were Family with Heart, August 21, 2010
    By

So many werewolves are dark, tortured and brooding (yawn) but Max is a refreshing change from all that – an intelligent, well-centered man with a sense of humor, even capable of laughing at himself.

As she demonstrated previously with Soul Mate, Ms. Bybee has a knack for squeezing a lot of character development into a short space. By the end of the story, I wanted a Max of my own. Janet didn’t disappoint either, a heroine who strikes the reader as someone we might have known or met, someone who feels real and believable.

The tension, both dramatic and sexual, keep the pace moving right along and sweep you to the conclusion. While I might have liked a bit more time with the were family, I have the feeling that we might just see some of these folks again..

I really enjoyed this book. It was a great quick read. As a busy mom of 3, sometimes a quick escape is exactly what i’m looking for after the kids are in bed. Before the Moon Rises was THAT book. After finishing the book I went straight and purchased Embracing the Wolf (book 2 in the series). I hope to get it started tonight. I’ve read several books by Catherine Bybee and so far I have not been disappointed :) She has definitely gotten herself a new fan!!
