Peter Gabriel 4: Security

Peter Gabriel 4: Security

Originally released in 1982. Remastered in 2002. Peter Gabriel 4 which was titled Security in the U.S., continues where the third Gabriel album left off, sharing some of the same dense production and sense of cohesion, yet lightening the atmosphere and expanding the sonic palette somewhat. The gloom that permeates the third album has been alleviated and while this is still decidedly somber and serious music, it has a brighter feel – partially derived from Gabriel’s dabbling in African and Latin

Given the current high prices for the SACD version, I decided to give the remastered CD version a try until I can find the SACD at a price I’m willing to pay (I own the original CD release).

The remastered CD is an improvement in clarity and detail over the original version. My only complaint is that the very end of the last track the last beat has been softened on the remaster. The last beat on the original is a bit more punctuated, sounds more appropriate to the song, and is more satisfying. The last beat on the remaster just seems to die.

Given the fairly low price of the remastered CD, I consider it a worthwhile upgrade to the original CD release (I’ll be keeping both, however).

`4′, also known as `Security’ is one of those albums that has stood the test of time and still seems to sound relevant and inspiring all these years later. We always knew Gabriel could write some amazing songs, but this albums seems to have a certain depth and darker edge compared to his previous outings. `San Jacinto’ is a wonderful story song and I never get tired of listening to it and `I Have The Touch’ is one of those songs that slips under the radar at first listen, but that seems to grow within you until it becomes one of your favourites on the album, if not of his back catalogue entirely. `Shock the Monkey’ is one of the better known tracks from this album and it definitely has a more upbeat feel and is the most accessible at first take. This is the album that moved Gabriel firmly away from the sound of his previous solo albums and more toward the world influences that coloured his work from here on and it shows an artist in flux and someone who dares to follow what their heart dictates rather than what the music industry commands. It is all the more powerful for it and makes for essential Gabriel listening.

I forgot how stunning and moving this album is, February 9, 2013

I had the cassette or vinyl to this album, but had long ago lost/misplaced it.

Time had caused me to forget how stunning & moving this is.

While “Shock The Monkey” received most of the pop airplay, there is far more to this album. I cannot think of a better opening track on any album as “The Rhythm of the Heat”. This song introduces a thematic & varied use of percussion, both real and echoed. “San Jacinto” is mournful and powerful, with Gabriel’s voice driving you to grieve.

The primitive sounds in “The Family and the Fishing Net” capture the essence of the story of the song.

While his work on “So” is more commerical & melodic, I believe Gabriel’s artistry reaches a different level in Peter Gabriel 4.

I’m glad I rediscovered this — it is one of my top all time albums. Brilliant.
