The 500Gb hard drive on my Dell XPS 420 died and I struggled with how to get the machine up and running again without too much expense. First, I knew I needed a new drive and since I have been running Carbonite (on-line/off-site backup) on this machine, I purchased a 1Tb SATA drive and replaced the failed drive. After reading a bunch of license notes on Microsoft’s website and a bunch of user comments, I figured out that I could use the “System Builder” version of Windows 7, because I was essentially building a system (for me). The only downside to this version of Windows that I can tell is that it does not come with support. I suppose the support is me, since I am the system builder. The second issue could be a downside, but I don’t see how, really. The “System Builder” version of Windows 7 is locked to the machine I installed it on, so I can’t move it to a new machine. Here is the workaround , from what I have read. If you purchase any upgrade, you now have a movable, regular license. Regardless, I don’t think I have ever moved a copy of Windows in all the years and machines I have managed. So, I turned on the machine and it said something about not being able to boot, of course. I opened the DVD drive and then hit F2 on the keyboard to re-try booting. Windows 7 began installing. It reboot a couple times and needed some inputs, but it was done in less than 2 hours. Now to try to recover all my pictures and movies from an on-line backup…

I was looking for a cheap Windows 7 disc for Boot Camp so that I could play Star Wars: The Old Republic when it comes out. After starting up the Boot Camp program all I had to do was insert the disk and let it run. This is great for anyone looking to get Windows 7 OS for Boot Camp for a cheap price, though I still prefer OS X Lion to Window 7.

Installed on my Windows 8 machine to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. Had a few software glitches with other software so thought I’d simply reinstall windows using the factory rescue disk. Now the key code won’t work and I have to repurchase the Pro upgrade again. The copy protection scheme is flawed.

Please compare to Windows Upgrade Assistant if you have 2 June – 31 Jan new windows machine, December 20, 2012

If you have a newly purchased win8 system/laptop starting, you will likely still qualify for using the less than fifteen promotion MS has right now until January 31, 2012. Go to windowsupgradeoffer.com , register, download and save the upgrade agent, wait for the e-mail to arrive with the discount code, right-click the .exe, choose properties, choose WinXP compatibility mode and use administrative rights, click Okay. Now double-click and follow the steps to get you the activation code and be sure to enter the discount code that arrived in your e-mail to receive the discount. Once you have the activation code, enter it into the “add new features to Windows” in the system control panel or use the right-swipe action to search for add then you’ll see the link to add new features. Select I have a code, enter it and your machine will then upgrade. Next it’ll reboot a time or two, then your machine will now be at Windows 8 Pro. If you want to use Windows Media Center you can until Jan 31, 2013 get a free feature code for use in Win8Pro via windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/feature-packs and scroll to second half. Within 2-5 days you’ll get an e-mail with the activation code, go to Add features to windows of your win8pro install and choose I have a code, enter the code from the e-mail and then Windows Media Center will be installed.

I purchased the product for download last night so I could get the free upgrade to windows media center. It is unfortunate that Microsoft decided to take away features. This reminds me of why I hat apple so much. My entire entertainment center is based around my ability to record tv and other programs onto my computer. Well I ponied up the cash and now I can’t even download the program. Customer service is “working on the issue” meanwhile I sit here wondering if I will miss the next episode of Revenge or The Walking Dead because my New laptop doesn’t have media center. Good job Microsoft for upsetting so many loyal customers.

As for windows 8, I have been playing with it for about 6 hours now. Once you get past the initial shock that nothing seems to be the same and get the free app windows 8 secrets it opens up and becomes not so troublesome. windows key and d is your friend if you prefer the traditional screen. I think I may grow to enjoy windows 8.

I would not recommend this download to anyone unless they call and confirm that it is working.
