The book is an excellent introduction to the vegan lifestyle. Ms. Getty ably argues for both the ethical and the nutritional aspects of veganism, but her emphasis is on ethics. She is uncompromising in her belief that all sentient beings have certain inalienable rights, and should therefore be neither slaughtered nor exploited at our convenience. From such a principled perspective, the consumption of milk and honey becomes as egregious as the consumption of meat.

But this is not a polemic. Rather, Ms. Getty has done her homework. She provides an exhaustive list of medicines, nutritional additives, clothing, and other items in daily use that contain animal products, sometimes in minute traces. If those are to be avoided, the number of replacement items is constantly growing. A vegan diet and animal free lifestyle do require some research, but Ms. Getty assures us they are getting easier to follow. She provides suggestions and links for further exploration, and a few fun recipes to get us started.

I am not a vegan and have no plan to become one, but I am interested in the reasons other people adopt this way of life. This book is the best I have read in explaining the various motivations of people who live this way. I especially appreciated the discussion of tensions between vegans and those who eat differently. Having been at the dinner table more than once when such conflict arose, I enjoyed the light touch, humor, and insight that the author brought to those situations.

This book provides a comprehensive holistic view of the vegan lifestyle. Using a no-nonsense, easy to read approach, the author clarifies the concept of veganism, from the history on up to today. My husband and I have been vegan for 6 months now and we are still learning new things everyday. My goal is to immerse myself into mindfulness about what I eat, wear, and consume in order to ensure that at all times, I am cognizant of my behavior and how it impacts my environment. This book assists in approaching that lifestyle. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who seeks to become more educated in the vegan movement!
