This review is from: Tranny Tales: Personal Stories of Gender Transition (Paperback)

Twenty stories of people changing their sex to match their gender identity. I am familiar with various communities of the Bay Area transgender community. This book showed me that I there is still a lot to learn. The personal stories are powerful, describing common life experiences lived by extraordinary people from a new perspective. This is a book about both male to female transition, and female to male transition. If you’ve been around alternative communities as long as I have, you learn that there are standard narratives – cliches, in the community, especially MTF. There are commonalities, but the diversity of experience delivered by this book is refreshing. Some pieces in the book are better written than others. But, experienced writers sometimes over write, creating beautiful works that are so perfectly crafted that they don’t have the awkwardness that shows a more honest writing. That is true in this book. For instance, the chapter by Magdelyn (“Risky Business”) is so well written, and with a sharp edge, that it is profoundly entertaining. But, it feels a bit distant, as if one were in a theatre looking a movie star. Whereas Lenox Ginn’s work, “Turned Inside Out” is delivered with an honesty that makes it compelling.

I loved the book. I think you will too.
