I have followed Ana almost since she started blogging, and have built several pieces of furniture already. In this book, you aren’t going to find complicated building methods like you see in the woodworking magazines – you can literally be a person who has never swung a hammer, and after following Ana’s simple directions, you will be building in no time. Also, you don’t need any expensive tools to build most of what she has in the book. The photos and design is gorgeous, and it’s nothing but plans. I’m excited to get back to building!

I do a lot of woodworking and furniture making. My wife suggested I get this book for the plans related to kids furniture. The book is well written and easy to follow. However, when I followed the shopping list and began to build the play table I realized one 8 foot long 1×3 was not enough for this project. With the children’s chair, only one 8 foot 2×2 was required, not the 2 specified in the shopping list. Also, the shopping list specifies 2 1/2 inch pocket screws. No where in the instructions does it say where to use them. If the book is intended for non-woodworkers as stated, errors of this type can confuse the beginner.

I have been following Ana’s blog since she was featured in Fresh Home’s magazine for a turquoise locker cabinet. I found her link and started building my first project, her barn beam ledges. Since then I’ve been given a mitre saw, table saw and pocket jig for birthday and christmas gifts and have built countless projects based on her plans. She even inspired me to create my own built-ins around our fire place! When her book came out I had to pre order it, knowing how wonderfully detailed her projects are and to support her as a DIY-ER. Her book is a great starter companion to those who may never have built before. The plans are easy to read and are written for those who are new to the craft. I love all the wonderful photography included showcasing her finished products. It was an innovative step to include other bloggers as well who helped her build the furniture from her plans; I think readers will appreciate that other people were able to build from her plans, rather than just the author speaking from experience. Now, I will be revamping my pantry, my entry way, buidling bunk beds for my kids, creating a play room…the list keeps growing and I am sure my husband will love me owning more power tools than he does. If you are even at all interested in learning how to build your own “home”, pick up this book, you will love it!
