First of all, this six drawer dresser isn’t light, the box weighs around 100Ibs. This isn’t a $1000 item, so don’t get disappointed when a $160 dresser shows up at your doorstep. The item is heavy, so you’ll definitely need a few people to get it where you want it, but it looks just as good as in the pictures, plus its affordable. The drawers work perfectly, its stable, and there’s tons of storage space. The reason a few people have had bad experiences with it is because they didn’t assemble it correctly. First off, you need two tools to do this with, a hammer and a Phillips head screwdriver. If its shaky that means you didn’t adequately tighten the pieces together. If the drawers fall out, then well you didn’t put the drawers together correctly. The drawers have tabs on both sides that prevent if from falling out, so there should be no instance of this. FYI: I just put together the 6-drawer dresser, the nightstand, and the 3 drawer dresser so I know what I’m talking about. The pieces look like their cut from a machine, and i had no instances of holes not lining up or pieces not fitting/aligning together properly (I also never had missing parts, just extras). Set up time is on the long side; it took me about 2-2.5 hours to put it together myself, but it was worth it. Take the time to assemble it because if you do a half as*ed job, you may find yourself with a half-as*ed dresser. Just follow the directions, and you will do O.K, & if you hate putting things together then let someone else do it. All in all, its a good dresser at a fantastic price.

P.S. (1)- in the event you are missing parts, there is a flyer in the box that says that any parts missing will be shipped to you at no extra cost.

P.S. (2) – every company has lemons, and if that’s the case, then return it and get a replacement

Fine dresser if you make a few assembly changes, June 30, 2011

This would get 1 STAR if it wasn’t for the minor assembly change I made. I assembled this dresser in a few hours over a two day period. There are two major differences between higher end assembled furniture and low end, flat pack furniture: 1. the materials used, and 2. the assembly method. You can’t do a lot about the materials in this dresser and in truth most of them aren’t bad for what you’re paying (mostly particle board covered with a melamine laminate), but you can make a simple change to the assembly method that will make a HUGE improvement in the durability and longevity of this dresser. One word for you: GLUE.

All preassembled furniture and cabinetry is glued, usually with a high quality polyurethane glue. The glue makes the joint 10 times stronger than any fastener alone. This dresser doesn’t come with any glue or any instructions to use glue. That doesn’t matter because you can still glue every joint with any good construction adhesive you find in a home improvement store. I recommend Loctite’s PL Premium, but Liquid Nails Heavy Duty adhesive would work fine too. I used PL Premium on every joint on this dresser (two small caulk gun sized tubes). Without this glue, I question whether this dresser would last 3 months in my boy’s bedroom.

As far as materials go, the two pieces of this dresser that I was really disappointed with were the draw bottoms and the back. In both cases the manufacturer supplied cardboard for these parts. Totally not acceptable and utterly ridiculous. I replaced the cardboard back with a sheet of 1/4″ birch plywood and the draw bottoms with 1/8″ aromatic cedar plywood (the grooves/dados are 1/8″ so don’t try going thicker on the drawer bottoms). Both added a tremendous amount of rigidity to the final product – rigidity you can’t get with the supplied flimsy cardboard. My cost for the glue and the two sheets of plywood was less than $50. If you wanted to use less expensive Luan instead of Birch/Cedar plywood, the cost would probably be about $30 and it will be worth every penny. Your local home improvement store can make all the cuts for you for a very small charge. You won’t regret it.

    Here’s what I used:

    (2) Henkel 828471 PL Premium Polyurethane Construction Adhesive, 10.2-Ounce
    (2) 1/8″ BALTIC BIRCH PLYWOOD 24″ x 48″ [CAPITOL CITY LUMBER]
    (1) 1/4″ x 4′ x 8′ Sheet of Luan or Birch Plywood from your local home improvement center

This took two of us 4 hours to put together. It looks pretty good once you’re done & put it up against a wall. Don’t expect high quality materials. It’s made of particle board so it chips REALLY easily if you bang it against a wall or something. We banged the corner against a wall while moving it into the room and had to pull a TINY chunk of the corner off. It comes with a little black marker for you to color in dents & chips. But if you don’t damage it, then it looks nice once it’s in place. The drawer slides are made of plastic and the back of the dresser is almost like a large piece of cardboard, so that’s how the dresser can be priced so low. The drawers aren’t as deep as it looks. The sides & back of the drawers don’t go as high as the panel on the front. I’m happy with it though for what I paid.
