This controls my entire home, September 3, 2012

This review is from: Mi Casa Verde Vera3 Flexible, Powerful and affordable Home Controller (Tools & Home Improvement)

All plugs/switches/locks/monitors all run off this badboy. The forums have a lot of great users that take time and help you if you have questions or need something “written” to perform any action you can imagine and if you search well enough you will find it’s probably already done. I have it setup so lights automatically turn on when someone is in a room, and they dim to a certain percentage dependent on the level of light outside so your never in a room too bright or too dim. Saves me a lot of money on electricity also… This is not for the unwilling to learn type people, out of the box it will do everything you would want, then you can get real creative and dream up something more advanced and utilize plugins that users have written to achieve almost anything…

    For example

Driveway Sensor tripped letting me know someone is coming.
    Lights on driveway turn on.
    Garage lights turn on.
The Movie i’m watching is paused (SQ Blaster)
The input on the TV switches to outdoor camera (Foscam PTZ)
    Camera turns toward driveway
I receive text message with photo and message that someone is coming in case im not in front of my tv
Audio is played through home system telling me there is a visitor (Via SONOS)
unlock the door for them from phone (Kwikset) or (if their cellphone connects to your WIFI it will realize it is a guest and unlock door for them (Ping Sensor plug)).
All lights back off, TV is switched back to the Movie, lighs dimmed and the movie resumes..

This can be expanded any way you like, and all part of a scene in Vera… Just use your imagination, expect to spend some time researching, and investing in z-wave hardware/gadgets but you can figure it out and tweaking it is the fun part.

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

Having had the Vera 3 for around three weeks now, I feel I’ve got a fairly good impression of it. It’s quick and easy to setup and I’ve yet to have to reset the device itself for any issues. I’ve got 17 lights and 1 thermostat on it and plan on getting the remaining ~10 switches in my house on it as well. Setting up scenes and schedules has been a breeze, so now waking up and coming home from work are much more pleasant. There’s a decent online community around the product which helps, I was able to find a nice free Android app to start scenes at the touch of the button remotely from my phone. I settled on this unit after shopping around and even trying an open source solution, to me this seemed to have the best price/performance ratio. What I consider the slickest feature is that for no monthly fee you can logon to this unit remotely from any web browser from the manufacturer’s website.

I have to take away 1 star because I have found the software to be a bit buggy. Occasionally it seemed to be mismatching devices to rooms and was creating duplicate events and scenes without me asking for it to. Eventually I was able to sort it out by logging out of the unit entirely and signing back in. It seems sometimes what it caches on the browser gets out of sync with what’s been saved to Vera, so if things ever start looking funky I recommend signing out/in immediately. Seeing as how I’ve been able to work around it and Vera gets firmware updates, I feel that’s only worth a 1 start reduction.

One feature I didn’t find documented is that this device does not have to replace your router. You can set it up to logon to your wireless network and work remotely, which is what I did as I’m not fond of the concept of using this as my router. It also allows you to put the device anywhere in your house within range of your wireless network.

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

I’ve had this for about 2 weeks now and added multiple devices to it. A few G/E light switches, some Aeon door sensors and some Kwikset dead bolts and a thermostat. Each device works flawlessly and was not difficult to setup. The iPhone app is a little over priced in my opinion but it works great. In fact the only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars is the fact that the GUI interface for the MiCasa is somewhat slow and can timeout. So you have to hit refresh on your browser on occasion.

Scene setup is somewhat strange but after about 5 mins I figured it out. I’ve ordered more light switches and motion sensors so I’ll update this when they arrive.

A Simple, Well-Designed, Easy To Use Timer Switch, August 6, 2010
    By

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Belkin Conserve Socket F7C009q Energy-Saving Outlet (Electronics)

With many “Conserve” products, Belkin doesn’t necessarily create a brand new concept with their creation, but they excel in design and execution!

I am a fan of their remote-switch “Conserve” power strip, and I love this little gadget too.

It’s essentially just a timer for an outlet, not unlike the existing products you can find on Amazon, but Belkin greatly simplified the controls, and made it so the power timer is on-demand instead of on a schedule.

Unlike the relatively complicated dials of some other timers, the controls on the Belkin Conserve Socket are pretty much idiot proof. There’s a switch on the site that lets you choose from one of three time increments (1/2 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours), then a button on top to start the timer. It then shuts itself off when the time elapses. That’s it! Easy.

It’s perfect for keeping a lamp on while the kids go to sleep, for charging gadgets where you want to reduce phantom draw, and this Christmas, I think I’m going to try it out for attaching my Christmas tree lights (turning the lights on only when we want to for a time).

Overall this is a nice, simple (and inexpensive!) product.

This product works as advertised. It is just a relay that kicks off after the set amount of time. I like it because:

    * It’s dead easy to use
    * It draws no power when off
    * It is small and nice looking enough that you don’t mind leaving it in a power socket
    * It’s rated for 15 amps, as much as any outlet can deliver, so you don’t need to worry about whether you’re plugging in something that could burn it out

I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because I’d like more timeout choices than 1/2 hour, 3 hours and 6 hours.

I originally bought three of these, as I knew I wanted at least two right away. I sort of figured another usage would show itself eventually.

Anyway, I bought one for my stereo system, as I like to go to sleep with music. Yet, I wanted it to turn off the entire system after so many minutes, as I usually fall asleep pretty quickly. The 30 minute setting was perfect for this, and it performs flawlessly. I really like that the unit has a LED on the same side as the button, so you KNOW when it’s on, AND, it’s a green LED that turns bright immediately, then drops to a dim glow until the unit turns off. This is wonderful for bedrooms as the light is so low, you don’t even notice it.

The other usage I got it for is to turn off my space heater in the winter time, as this unit can handle up to the full 15 amps of pass through current. I tested that, and that also works. I am not sure whether I will use the 30 minute, the 3 or 6 hour setting. See this is for my computer room, and I expect I’ll only need it for the first 30 minutes, as my computer does a good job of heating the room after it’s on a while.

Update: After only a couple of months, one of the units stopped working as a switch. It now just passes the electricity through, effectively leaving it turned on forever. This makes it worthless when it fails.
