Sunset does a good job here of providing basic information on using stones in landscaping, including a very nice part on pebble mosaics. This book is better than the Taunton book on the same topic. Taunton suffers from sloppy editing, e.g., too much duplication on garden paths, and insufficient explanation for the DIYer. The main criticism here that I have is 1) lack of modernism. There is almost no coverage for modernist applications of stonework in architectural landscaping. 2) An adversion to including significant “commercial” installations. For example, the garden at the Getty Center, or any similiar garden, could have been included for inspiration and ideas. Overall though, its worth the money, and better than the Tauton competition.

We landscaped our backyard last year complete with flagstone patio, gardens and a rock retaining wall. This book was straight forward and extremely helpful. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Excellent Sunset guide and well written book with plenty of photos, tips, ideas and how-to indications to be crative and build your desired garden, paths, walls, etc… with stones. Ample information on how to build with stone: tips, instructions and sources for materials. A must have for a gardener.

This program is for the amateur enthusiast who is not looking to create detailed framing plans for decks, rather it is for creating and viewing spaces and landscape layouts. It’s tools are towards general concepts of homes, decks and other outdoor living in terms of space planning.
If you need something to create detailed “construction documents” you will need Home Designer Pro where you then have manual control of framing and roof design elements (one always gets what they pay for). But if you just need to see how things will fit and look, this one is for you.

Not as advertised, March 24, 2013

Okay, the software is okay, but they advertised over 3600 realistic plants to use, which is the reason I wanted it. Got it set up and there are only about 50 and none of them are what was promised.

To get the “3600 life like plant images”, you have to order the $400. version of this program. Not interested.

I was only using this to get an idea of doing my flower beds, but instead of using this software, I’m back to an ink pen and blank paper, as before, drawing my plans by hand and guessing.

Should have just saved my money. I could have bought more plants instead of this software.

If I really worked on this I would get the hang of it but it would be helpful to have a CAD degree! Wanted to do only landscaping but can’t get past the house development. I feel it has potential, though so 4 stars.
