Cinderella in Cleats

Cinderella in Cleats

It started just like any other Saturday: Whitney, her best friend, Jason, and their fathers tossed an old football around in the park. But when her dad dies of a heart attack, Whitney doesn’t realize her passion for the sport and her friendship with Jason will never be the same. Two years later, Whitney’s ready to begin the long journey of re-discovering her love for football, encountering a sexist coach, an unethical but irresistible opponent, a mustard yellow T-shirt, and Jason along the way.

This book is above and beyond my expectations. The preview of the book was good, but the actual story was BETTER! I couln’t set this book down when I started, and I couldn’t believe it either! I don’t even know how to play football, but I still loved reading about her playing it! I recommend this book to all of you romance/sports readers out there! This book is fantastic, and will not let you down. Plus, it has a surprising twist at the end (and for my opinion about the ending, it surprised the heck out of me, and it made me sad/mad, but probably not why you think so).

Really not good at all, January 16, 2012

This book had the potential to be an entertaining read. However, it couldn’t have been further from that. I agree with a previous reviewer that said the story had too many plot lines going on. That was my biggest complaint with the story by far.

At the beginning of the story, I was pretty convinced that Jason was going to have really good reasons for deserting her and being a tool. I thought we were going to get some good scenes between her and Jason, especially with her trying out for the football team and his spot, no less. What made me quit rooting for Whitney and Jason was his comment when she showed up on the field–she shouldn’t be there because she was a girl? What the heck? It’s not even a matter of equality that is my hangup with this. It’s the fact that he was there every step of the way when she was playing football with her and her dad. He was there when her died on the field. He should have known that this would be hard enough for his former best friend and he goes and says something like that? What made me even angrier was that Whitney just took it! She didn’t even say anything to stick up for herself.

Another issue with Jason is the fact that he asked her out and then expected her to be okay that he wasn’t breaking up with his girlfriend? And what bothered me even more with that storyline was the fact that Whitney said yes to the date in the first place when she knew that he had a girlfriend in the first place. Not cool at all.

It was very difficult to like Whitney because she was a flaky character. The only person she didn’t really turn her back on was Dirk. One minute she is head over heels for Jason. The next it’s Scott, which is a huge no-no since she knows that Sophie dated him. She justifies herself by saying that Sophie never told her why they broke up, but she knew it would still upset her best friend regardless. Then after Scott, there was Colt who she was automatically head over heels for. What made it hard to have any respect for Whitney overcoming the fact that she was a woman playing a man’s sport was that when she was playing her first game in a new school, she allowed someone from the opposing team to come to *their* sideline to flirt with her. I just couldn’t bring myself to feel any kind of sympathy, especially when she didn’t even care that they lost the game.

There were just too many things going on in one book. It felt like I was reading multiple stories at once and it kind of made my head spin a little. I often found myself getting confused with everything and had a difficult time keeping up with all the names of the guys.

If the author would have picked a storyline to stick with, I think this could have been a really cute book. Unfortunately it fell way short.

    Better than I expected!, December 27, 2010

I absolutely devoured this book. It had everything I didn’t expect it to. The classical “cinderella story” mixed in with a modern day story with a twist describes this book perfectly. I couldn’t put it down. I read it in only one day and I was in shock when I finished it. The book was just WOW!!!!
