Anne McKinnell writes like she is your best friend, who just happens to be an amazing photographer, and is willing to give you all her photography secrets. Her book, “8 Types of Natural Light…” was a part of our home-school curriculum for my daughter this school year as she incorporated academics into her love of photography and travel. We found Anne’s writing to be very clear, concise and easy to understand. She has such a natural voice that is very present and authentically easy to be with…like you are standing right next to her out on a shoot, and she is guiding you personally. The photographs Anne has chosen to illustrate her points are stunning, and emphasize the text perfectly. They really bring it home in our “getting it” and keep coming to mind once we are out in the field on shoot day.

This is a great book for someone who already had a basic, working knowledge of their camera and is ready to get out into the field and start shooting. It’s a great overview on lighting, and goes on a quick, easy-to-read tour of the different types of lighting in outdoor photography: backlight, sidelight, front-light, reflected light, diffused, dramatic, twilight and nighttime lighting…each of which has their own joys and challenges. Anne explains how each occurs, what it is, when to use it (and not), why to use it, and gives gorgeous photo examples of graphic and artistic use of lighting. She also touches on correct exposure, how to handle lens flare, what to focus on in different lighting situations, and how to achieve camera stabilization as you shoot.

Anne included an easy to understand explanation of how to read and use your histogram and there are some great tips on camera equipment and use, and what to take and use in different outdoor conditions. At the end of the book, Anne leaves you with a very helpful assignment and some next steps to get you started in applying what you just learned in her book. This book opened our eyes to new ways of seeing when we go out on a shoot day.

Make sure you check out Anne’s travel and photography blog, which is absolutely packed with loads of educational information and tips on photography. [...] We followed her blog this past year as she left her job and traveled around the United States in an RV with her husband and her beloved dog Oscar, photographing some of the most beautiful places on earth. We have so enjoyed following Anne’s growth and adventures, as well as the books that were written along the way, and look forward to more.
